Dorsey-Spitz finished a distant second to Vanatta at last year's state cross country meet, and the scenario played out again on Saturday at this year's state meet.
Vanatta simply ran away from the pack en route to her second consecutive state cross country title, clocking a time of 18 minutes, 14.95 seconds. Dorsey-Spitz was second at 19:27.09, followed by Alamosa's Lindsey Sowards at 19:37.8. Pueblo West freshman Anna Marshall finished ninth at 20:14.9.

To Victor goes the spoils at state

Cross country runners embark on final race of the season.

By MIKE SPENCE
THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN

Perhaps it's served as an omen of things to come. Or, maybe, it's simply a Freudian slip of the typist, but it's happened without fail.

Whenever cross country results have come in this season to be re-entered for publication in The Chieftain, every typist (and there have been several) has inadvertently added a "y" at the end of Victor Montoya's first name.

The mistake has been corrected before publication. But make no mistake, Montoya and victory have become synonymous this season. More >>

Pueblo West at Fountain-Fort Carson, 7 p.m. - Facing a team that was unbeaten before last week, the Cyclones are in a must-win situation to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Centennial survives against Ralston Valley; Pueblo West also wins while Canon City and Pueblo South fall.

By JEFF LETOFSKY
THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN

For more than 78 minutes Wednesday night at Dutch Clark Stadium, Centennial High School's boys soccer playoff life hung in the balance.

It wasn't supposed to be that difficult - especially in the first round - but the playoffs never are.

The unbeaten and untied Bulldogs, seeded fifth in the 32-team Class 4A state boys soccer field, were being pushed to the limit by 28th seed Ralston Valley of the Jefferson County League.

Centennial gains No. 5 seed in boys state soccer bracket
By JEFF LETOFSKY THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN
South-Central League boys soccer kingpin Centennial High School garnered the No. 5 seed entering the 2006 Class 4A state soccer tournament.
The Bulldogs (15-0), who made history by making the semifinals in 2005, will host 28th seed Ralston Valley (6-9) Wednesday at Dutch Clark Stadium in the first round of the 32-team bracket. Centennial veteran head coach Jeff Sterling said Sunday he's not happy with his team's seeding.
"We should have been at least a No. 3. That's where we were last year with the same record," Sterling said. "I'm not happy with our entire league seeding."
Three other S-CL teams made the bracket but will have to play road contests.
League runnerup Pueblo West (11-2-2) drew the 17th seed and will travel to meet 16th seed Cherokee Trail (10-4-1). Canon City (9-5-1) is the 21st seed and will head to Denver to take on 12th seed Lincoln (6-8). And Pueblo South drew the 29th seed and has a difficult task ahead in No. 4 seed Cheyenne Mountain (14-1).
First-round games must be completed by Wednesday. The round of 16 must be played Saturday. The quarterfinals are set for Nov. 1 with the semifinals Nov. 4 and champion games Nov. 7 set for Pirate Field at Englewood High School.
Centennial, which has captured six consecutive league titles, has won 33 of its past 34 games. In addition, the Bulldogs have lost only once at Dutch Clark Stadium since soccer has been played there. They currently own a 46-game winning streak at Dutch Clark.
One other interesting statistic: Centennial has allowed the fewest goals in the entire classification. The Bulldogs have posted 11 shutouts in 15 games.
In Class 3A, Salida was the lone Southern Colorado team to make the 16-team state field. The Spartans (9-5-1) are the No. 6 seed and will host a first round game either Tuesday or Wednesday against 11th seed Kent Denver (9-5-1).

Complete effort carries Bulldogs
Centennial stuns previously undefeated Fountain-Fort Carson in Pikes Peak.
By TOM PURFIELD THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN

For 3 quarters Saturday afternoon, Centennial High School played near-perfect football.
Although Fountain-Fort Carson made things interesting late, the Bulldogs rode their complete effort to a 21-14 Pikes Peak League win over the previously undefeated and Class 4A fifth-ranked Trojans at Dutch Clark Stadium.
It was a sweet homecoming win for Centennial (4-4 overall, 3-3 league), which was a decisive underdog entering the contest against Fountain (7-1, 6-1).

RUSHING-Centennial: Cuevas 11-136, Rodriguez 13-16, TD, Bechina 2-56, TD, Philson 8-48, TD.

Tiny Miscues lead to big disappointment for local softball teams

Pueblo West's run of consecutive state softball title ends at two after 4-1 loss on Friday.
By JOE E. CERVITHE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN
AURORA - The difference between the top 16 teams in the Class 4A state softball tournament is so small that the tiniest of miscues can end a team's season in a heartbeat.
They did on Friday.
Twice.
Two-time defending champion Pueblo West dropped a heart-breaking 4-1 decision to No. 12 Northridge in a morning game at the Aurora Sports Park.
Two hours later, on the same exact field, No. 15 Pueblo Central took No. 2 Windsor to an extra inning, eventually falling 4-3 in eight.
"Sometimes you can get away with little mistakes during the season, but not up here," Cyclones head coach Bob Zinanti said as his team ended its season 15-6-1. "It was the little things - pitching ahead, making good throws, stuff like that. Maybe we had some jitters, I don't know. We played hard, we just didn't play loose. And we need to play loose to be successful."
The first-round loss was a rarity, indeed, for the Cyclones, having won back-to-back state titles in 2004 and ’05.

Pueblo County falls to highly touted Alamosa on failed two-point conversion 21-20.

By TOM PURFIELDTHE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN
Once in a great while, a high school football game exceeds expectations, where statistics and strategy go out the window and the contest turns into a battle of wills.
Pueblo County and Alamosa high schools engaged in that type of battle Friday night, leaving the crowd of 3,500 buzzing at Hornets Stadium after a game that went to the wire between the only two unbeaten teams in South-Metro League play.
The Hornets went for the win after scoring a touchdown with 20 seconds to play, but the Mean Moose stuffed running back Myles Martinez and Alamosa floated away with a 21-20 win that will be talked about for some time to come.
"I had faith in them," Pueblo County coach Jeff Wilson said. "We run off tackle all the way down the field and, hey, I thought we could do it there at the end, too."
The Hornets went toe-to-toe with undefeated Alamosa, complete with its No. 1 ranking in Class 3A, an offense that entered averaging 54.7 yards per game and an average margin of victory of 50.4 points. MORE>>
