Manning takes apart weird scheme

INDIANAPOLIS -- As soon as the eight-man inactive list was distributed Sunday afternoon, the Broncos were in trouble, and it had nothing to do with wide receiver Javon Walker and safety John Lynch being scratched because of injuries.

Mike Shanahan tipped off that it was going to be tough to beat the Colts (4-0) in the RCA Dome. During the offseason, the Denver head coach hired Jim Bates to restructure his defense, trying to get bigger and tougher at defensive tackle. But because the Broncos were playing Peyton Manning's no-huddle offense, Shanahan scratched starting defensive tackles Sam Adams and Amon Gordon. Instead, the Broncos lined up in a weird alignment in which they started four defensive ends, one of whom (rookie Jarvis Moss) played as a stand-up defensive tackle.

The Broncos went vegetarian when they needed some beef and were blown off the line of scrimmage and out of the game 38-20. But that's what happens when coaches face Manning. The Colts' quarterback gets into coaches' heads so much that they become unconventional. Shanahan -- who lost to the Colts by 31 and 25 the past two times they met in the playoffs -- is no different.

"We knew going into the game we had to limit Indy's possessions," Shanahan said. "I think we did limit their possessions, but obviously they did a great job of making some plays, running and throwing the ball.' MORE>>

Underdogs deliver multiple hard-to-believe moments

Kevin Eberhart and Colorado beat No. 3 OU on a last-second field goal

A short while after shocking Oklahoma, and by extension, the world, Colorado coach Dan Hawkins was squiring recruits across campus on a golf-cart tour.

It turned into a victory tour, as the caravan was mobbed by celebrating students.

"Everyone's fired up," Hawkins said with a chuckle Saturday night.

Underdog campuses were fired up all over America on Insanity Saturday. They were also fired up in Auburn, Ala. And in Manhattan, Kan. And College Park, Md. And Tampa, Fla., too.

The students in those locales had reason to party after their teams upset top-10 teams this weekend. Down went No. 3 Oklahoma to Colorado, No. 4 Florida to Auburn, No. 7 Texas to Kansas State, No. 10 Rutgers to Maryland, and on Friday, No. 5 West Virginia to South Florida.

Throw in upset losses by No. 13 Clemson and No. 21 Penn State and even first-half deficits for big dogs USC and LSU against Washington and Tulane, respectively, and you have Insanity Saturday. Just that fast, the college football landscape shifted seismically beneath our feet.

Cody Hawkins threw for 220 yards and two TDs against the Sooners.

Receiver Walker and safety Lynch are game-time decisions

(2-1) (3-0)

Sunday, September 30
2:15 pm MT on

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Javon Walker watched practice from the sideline on Thursday with an ice pack wrapped around his right knee.

However, the Broncos wide receiver said the swelling in his surgically repaired knee is nothing to worry about and that he fully expects to play Sunday at Indianapolis.

Javon Walker is confident that he will play on Sunday, but it will remain a game-time decision.

"This is too big of a game," Walker said. "Everybody wants to play in a game like this."

Broncos coach Mike Shanahan will evaluate both Walker and safety John Lynch (groin) on Friday and make a decision on whether they'll play. Shanahan said both will be game-time decisions.

"We'll see how much they recover over the next couple of days," Shanahan said.

Walker missed almost all of his 2005 season in Green Bay after tearing his right ACL. He joined the Broncos in a draft-day trade last year and caught 69 passes for 1,084 yards and eight touchdowns.

Walker leads the Broncos in receptions this season with 19 for 230 yards. He was held to two catches for 10 yards in a 23-14 loss to Jacksonville on Sunday.

"It felt pretty good today," Walker said of his knee. "I'll probably give it a tryout (Friday) at practice and see how it feels, and get ready for Sunday. It's nothing that got repaired or anything to be concerned about."

Denver Broncos..Drills for heart .

By James Mata, Pueblo Colorado Sports Blog
September 23, 2007

Finally the Orange and Blue lost. It's about time they saw what the other side of the coin looks like, well they should be chewing on their own heartless game against the Jaxwires all week long well digging on their full padded work out. Maybe they will start looking at them selves as mortal instead of patting each other on the back for squeaking out of the past two games against the two sucky teams of the NFL, the Bills and Raiders ,and get some bloody heart. I hope that was a long plane ride back from opppss never mind they played at home.

No worries though, now that they got this lose behind them they will Clam together and beat the living high horse out of the Colts.
Did you see the master mind at work. He wanted to pull out more of his play book but could not, why? because the play book is waiting for the Colts. There are bigger fish to fry but in this case Colts. I say Broncos will beat the Colt because they will have a bloody heart. It is a match made in heaven.
Broncos Vs Colts it speaks for it self.

A preview of the Week 3 matchup between the Jaguars and the Broncos

http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d802880b4

Sorting through the contenders and pretenders

Even though it's still just September, there are 10 undefeated teams. So which teams are contenders and which are pretenders? Let's break it down.

1. New England Patriots
This is the best team in the NFL with no major weaknesses. The Patriots game plan better than anybody, have a roster full of veterans and they make in-game adjustments better than anybody. Defensively, they are getting great play out of their LBs and this is a group with amazing versatility. They can play run or pass defense equally well. They can blitz, they matchup well and this is a unit full of interchangeable parts. On offense Tom Brady has his best weapons ever and is starting a magical season. His pass protection is good, he spreads the ball around, and if the Patriots don't pass, they have the talent to run the ball effectively. On top of everything else, they play with a chip on their shoulder. This team is never unprepared nor looking ahead and it's not out of the question New England could go 16-0.
Status: Contender
2. Houston Texans
QB Matt Schaub and a much improved defense are finally giving the Texans a chance to be competitive. The defense, led by a D-line that is starting to dominate, is creating turnovers and is especially stout versus the run. Offensively, the Texans are running the ball effectively, controlling the clock and letting Schaub make key plays when needed. Schaub is not putting up huge numbers, but he doesn't turn the ball over and gives this team a boost of confidence heading into this week's showdown with the Colts, which will show just how far this team has come -- or has to go.
Status: Pretender.
3. Indianapolis Colts
The defending Super Bowl champions look a lot like the team that won it all a year ago. Let's see, great offense, incomparable quarterback, a good running game and a defense that shows excellent team speed? Yep, sounds familiar. But they are somewhat undersized and still susceptible to physical, power run games. The Colts have four new starters on defense but you get the feeling they'll be a top 15 defense in another month because of their athleticism and range. If that happens. Indy will be tough to beat because we know it will put up a lot of points. The Colts don't have to play great defense to get back to the Super Bowl, they just have to be a middle of the pack unit. This will be a tough team to beat.
Status: Contender.
4. Pittsburgh Steelers
These are vintage Steelers. They run the ball with a physical style, play an attacking defense that punishes opponents and ask QB Ben Roethlisberger to manage the game and utilize a very effective play-action package off the run game. They don't give up big plays on defense and may be the best in the league at creating turnovers. As strange as it sounds, this is almost a tougher and more physical team than it ever was under Bill Cowher. If everything else is clicking, the Steelers don't have to be great in the passing game because they will control the clock and tempo. All they need Big Ben to do is manage the game and limit turnovers -- a strong recipe for playoff success.
Status: Contender.
5. Denver Broncos
Some people would call them lucky after two narrow wins over inferior opponents, but good teams find a way to win when they don't play their best game. The Broncos are in that category. Remember, even though the season is only two weeks old, Denver is in the top third in almost all offensive and defensive categories. On defense, the Broncos have the best CB duo in the league (Champ Bailey and Dre Bly). That allows them to blitz and play a lot of exotic schemes behind man-to-man coverage. The running game is productive, as usual, and while QB Jay Cutler has been a little bit up-and-down, he can do everything they ask of him and by midseason he will be at the top of his game.
Status: Contender.

Ground game a constant for Broncos

Danny Kanell jokes that he can now expect a visit from NFL security. Teams usually reclaim their playbooks when a player is released. But the former Denver quarterback kept his copy and was willing to share the concepts behind head coach Mike Shanahan's ballyhooed offense with FOXSports.com.

The Broncos (2-0) enter Sunday's game against visiting Jacksonville as the NFL's top-ranked offensive unit. New starting running back Travis Henry has a league-high 267 rushing yards and second-year quarterback Jay Cutler ranks fourth among passing leaders with 573 yards.

No team has had more points or total yardage the past 12 seasons than the Broncos. Such consistency doesn't surprise opposing coaches or Kanell, who played seven years in the NFL with three teams (the New York Giants, Atlanta and Denver) until being released by the Broncos during the 2005 preseason.

"Mike has a system," said Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips, a defensive specialist who has matched wits against Shanahan for more than two decades.

"That's what I admire about what he does. He can put different people in there and do well with all of them."

The foundation of Shanahan's success is his playbook. Kanell's version contains 20 pages of formations and an eight-day installation plan designed for the start of the preseason. The tome is revamped every off-season with new material and terminology.

Kanell, who is now serving as a Miami Dolphins pre-game radio analyst, said some of Shanahan's plays are almost impossible to stop if the Broncos execute properly.

"Ask the best defensive coordinators and they will tell you the same thing: There's always going to be a good play for the quarterback if he makes good decisions no matter what the defense throws at you," Kanell said. "This was one of my favorite offenses to run because it was so quarterback-friendly."

Kanell provides an example by dissecting one of Denver's staple plays: Solo Right 2 Jet X Under Y.

Run out of a three-receiver, single-back set with a tight end aligned beside the left tackle, the quarterback's intent is a long pass to the slot receiver (Y) zipping down the seam on the formation's right side.

The quarterback takes a five-step drop and looks left toward the X receiver, who is running a five-yard slant-in ("under") route popularized by Indianapolis' Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison. The hope is that the free safety will bite and abandon the "Y."

If that safety stays in the middle of the field and/or the cornerbacks are playing press coverage, Kanell said the quarterback should pass to his X receiver or risk getting his Y receiver "lit up big time." If the X receiver also is unavailable, the other throws available are:

The Duke

Cutler embracing the legend of No. 7

As microphones, cameras, notepads and television audiences awaited the words and expressions of the comeback hero, Jay Cutler nonchalantly dropped the name John Elway.

No media member had dared bring up the Duke, out of fairness to the kid. Then Cutler did it.

Imagine that. Brian Griese and Jake Plummer, the immediate successors to Hall of Famer Elway as the Broncos' quarterback, didn't shy from the legend's shadow so much as they approached it on tiptoes.

After the Broncos' season-opening victory at Buffalo, Cutler greeted the expectations left by Elway with a strong bearhug.

"He didn't go anywhere," Cutler said. "You guys are going to compare us whether we shy away from him or not. Until we win the Super Bowl, people here are going to throw out John Elway's name. So we might as well embrace it. He's the greatest quarterback who ever played. Why not appreciate it?"

This direct approach may well provide a window into why Cutler is so effective when the Broncos are down and the game is late. Elway was the greatest comeback quarterback in NFL history and has the unofficial record to prove it. His 47 fourth-quarter or overtime game- saving or game-winning drives remain the comeback standard.

Brett Favre, who either has, or is within reach of, just about every other career passing record, is well behind, with 37 fourth-quarter comebacks.

Cutler, though, is well ahead of Elway's pace. With three late comebacks in a row - the final game of 2006 against San Francisco (although the Broncos ended up losing that game), the 2007 opener at Buffalo and last weekend against Oakland - Cutler has three through his first seven games. Elway didn't get his third comeback until his 22nd game.

When it comes to fourth-quarter comebacks, perhaps Cutler will be Tiger to Elway's Golden Bear.

As has been communicated, scoring has been a problem for the Broncos this year as it relates to their prolific yardage totals. When a team leads the NFL with 455.5 yards per game, it should average a few more than 19.0 points.

Then again, when a team is 2-0 despite having the lead only 32 percent of the time (41 minutes, 8 seconds of 129 minutes and 12 seconds of play), it speaks to the Broncos' ability to score when absolutely necessarily at game's end.

"That's the way it goes in the National Football League," said Brandon Stokley, a ninth-year receiver who won Super Bowl rings with Baltimore and Indianapolis. "You see those games a lot. The good teams win those games."

Favre: Stealing signs 'can give advantage'

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - As a former high school baseball star, Brett Favre knows it's not unheard of for a ballplayer to sneak a peek at the signals a catcher is sending to his pitcher.
But if the New England
Patriots really were using a video camera to steal opposing defensive coaches' signals — perhaps even in their game against the Packers last year — Favre said they might have gone too far.
"Can it cross the line? I'm sure it can," Favre said. "It can give you a huge advantage."
NFL security officials confiscated a camera and tape from a
Patriots employee on the sidelines during New England's 38-14 victory on Sunday. The league now is investigating whether the Patriots were spying on signals from the Jets' defensive coaches.
The
Packers also had an incident with a Patriots employee shooting unauthorized video during New England's 35-0 victory at Lambeau Field last November. Packers officials simply asked him to stop.
Czar: Belichick is Mr. Unpopular
Kriegel: Dirty tricks
Czar: Everyone does it
But given the current controversy, last year's incident has taken on added significance.
Favre called the sign-stealing allegations a "serious issue," one that goes above and beyond the normal scope of gamesmanship in the NFL — or sign-stealing in baseball, for that matter — mostly because of the use of technology.
"It seems different," Favre said.
Packers cornerback Al Harris was more direct in questioning the Patriots' ethics.

Who is Lombardi bound?

THE NON-LURKING LOOMERS
11. Dallas

10. Denver
There's enough firepower (Javon Walker, Travis Henry, Ian Gold, D.J. Williams, Champ Bailey, Dre Bly), enough upside (the chance that Jay Cutler will exceed expectations) and enough done-it-before history (Mike Shanahan rarely misses the playoffs for two straight years) here that the Broncos look like a potential playoff team. That's before factoring in what happened to the late Darrent Williams and remembering that tragedy invariably unites a football team and provides an overall purpose that may have been missing otherwise. I'm not trying to belittle what happened to Williams, the Broncos' young cornerback who was senselessly murdered outside a Denver nightclub last spring. But for the sole purposes of determining why a football team will be better or worse than it looks on paper, you can't underestimate the emotional makeup of a team that lost a beloved teammate for a really stupid reason, buried him, mourned him and eventually dedicated its season to his memory (as well as the memory of backup RB Damien Nash, who collapsed during a pickup basketball game last spring). Every little edge counts in the NFL. Just look at the Saints last year.

More importantly, the Broncos might have the easiest schedule in the league. They play Oakland twice, Kansas City twice, Detroit, Buffalo and Houston on the road, and Jacksonville, Minny, Green Bay, Tennessee and Pittsburgh at home. Let's say they go 3-1 against Oakland/KC, 2-1 in the easy road games and 4-1 in the easy home games. That's nine wins. Then, if they can steal one more game against San Diego (home), Indy (road), Chicago (road) or San Diego again (on the road in Week 16, when the Chargers may already have clinched a 1 or 2 seed and will be more interested in resting Tomlinson to screw up everyone's fantasy league finals), that gets the Broncos to 10 wins and pushes them into the playoffs. Sometimes it's that easy.

(My only red flag with the Broncos: Can't say I love the Jay Cutler feedback coming out of training camp. When you're repeatedly described as "quiet," "a loner" and "someone who keeps to himself," you're more qualified to be a serial killer than a starting NFL QB.)

They blew that Colts game in January for four reasons: They couldn't run for a first down when it mattered; they couldn't catch a third down pass when it mattered; they couldn't stretch the field; and they couldn't stop the pass because their linebackers were too slow and their secondary was too banged up. All four problems have been fixed. Don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger.

Anyway, here's my Super Bowl pick: New England over Seattle. Now that we have that settled, let's hit the Week 1 slate.

Broncos, Rice agree on one-year deal

Frying Rice

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Nobody's more excited about Denver's signing of free agent sacks specialist Simeon Rice than Broncos safety John Lynch.

The two won a Super Bowl together in Tampa Bay in 2002, and both believe this reunion in the Rockies could lead to a second ring.

"He's a teammate who I loved playing with and one of the great pass-rushers of all-time. So, we'd be - anyone would be - fortunate to get him," Lynch said Monday while the sides were signing the one-year deal at Broncos headquarters.

Rice, whose 121 career sacks rank second to Michael Strahan among active players, was released by Tampa Bay this summer after the Buccaneers signed first-round draft pick Gaines Adams.

Rice had failed a physical earlier in the day after reporting to camp, but has since passed his medical tests. The 33-year-old started the first eight games last year before being sidelined by a shoulder injury.

Lynch said Rice told him he was fine: "He told me his shoulder's feeling good and he feels like he's ready to play."

Coach Mike Shanahan courted Rice to bring experience and pressure to a young defensive line.

"He's a big-time pass rusher, he's been in the league for a while, he's got a lot of talent," Shanahan said.

Simeon Rice was a integral part of the 2002 Super Bowl championship defense

A comparison of Pro Bowl rosters shows 4-3 linebackers declined in average weight from roughly 248 pounds to 240 since 2001. The average weights declined slightly every season during that span, except for 2004.

While 3-4 defenses have proliferated, taking with them bigger linebackers, the league's 4-3 linebackers are all about speed -- for good reason.

Listed at 223 pounds, Denver Broncos linebacker Ian Gold takes on 245-pound Cleveland Browns running back Jamal Lewis.

Fewer offenses lean heavily on powerful fullbacks. Defenses are less likely to need bruising linebackers to combat them.

Athletic tight ends are becoming more common. Heavier linebackers have a harder time covering them.

Teams are more likely to run and pass from spread formations on first and second downs. Most linebackers weighing 250 pounds have a harder time matching up.

"If you've got a couple of big defensive tackles who can pick up blocks, you can free up those [small] linebackers," Mora said. "Denver is a great example. They put a premium on speed at linebacker."

The Broncos list linebacker Ian Gold at 223 pounds and safety John Lynch at 220.

Coaches still talk about running the ball and stopping the run, as they should, but the smart ones know winning teams are more likely to excel in a range of offensive stats, notably yards per pass attempt.

Trotter was long a mainstay of the Eagles' defense. He was a four-time Pro Bowl choice and respected in the locker room. But he was also increasingly a situational run stuffer, and coaches preferred Gaither's potential.

If Trotter fails to resurface as a starter -- he reached a one-year deal with Tampa Bay on Monday -- the league could be down to eight starting 4-3 linebackers listed at 250 or heavier.
