ALAMOSA, Colo. — Pueblo South High School senior Ashley Martinez became the first official softball recruit of the 2006 early signing period when she signed with the Adams State College Grizzlies and head coach Cari Boe last week.
Martinez earned First Team All-State honors for the Rick Reyes coached Colts. She will join the Grizzly squad for the 2007-08 season.
“Ashley is a good, hard-working, dedicated athlete that loves the game of softball,” said coach Boe. “She has quick hands and good footwork up the middle, and she has potential to do well in the RMAC.”
Martinez, a middle-infielder with some experience at third base, also earned Second Team All-State accolades in both 2003 and 2004. She will join a Grizzly team that made the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference post-season tournament last season for the first time since 2001"

Eagle eyes elusive state crown
By TRACY RENCKTHE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN
There Matt Basquez was - on the brink of wrestling for a state championship.
There Matt Basquez was - on the brink of wrestling for a state championship.
The East High School standout was leading Montrose's Jordan Reese 2-1 with just five seconds remaining in their 135-pound Class 4A semifinal match last February at the Pepsi Center in Denver.
All Basquez had to do was keep Reese from scoring in the waning moments. That was seemingly made easier since Basquez and Reese were meeting at the center of the mat.
Then, the unthinkable happened.
Reese took Basquez down to the mat and scored a two-point takedown as the clock expired. Those five seconds have been replaying in Basquez's head for the past nine months.
"That was one of the worst feelings in my life," the 5-foot-6 Basquez said. "It was so shocking and so devastating."
Basquez ended up finishing fifth at state, but he has much different plans for his senior year. get the

Hornets Conquer Summit 34 - 7

Pueblo County vs. SummitPUEBLO - Pueblo County held up its end of an all-South Metro League Class 3A state championship game with a dominating 34-7 semifinal win against Summit on Saturday at Hornets Stadium. The Hornets (11-2) will travel to Alamosa to face the undefeated Mean Moose (13-0), a 21-20 winner at Florence, next Saturday in the title game.Summit's season ended at 12-1.Pueblo County won the war in the trenches, which fueled both a stifling defense and a pounding running game. As the Hornets broke to a 21-0 halftime lead, they outgained Summit 295-50 in total yards during the first 24 minutes."I can't say enough about our linemen; they're the heart and soul of our team," Pueblo County coach Jeff Wilson said. "We don't have the speed to out-talent people, we have to be able to handle people up front. That's our game."Myles Martinez and Zach Martinez each scored two touchdowns and ran for 120 and 81 yards, respectively. Joe Pullara rushed for a game-high 133 yards with a touchdown, and quarterback J.T. Greenhood kept the Tigers honest by completing 5-of-6 passes for 76 yards. The Hornets rushed for 375 yards overall. The Hornets three defensive linemen also crushed the Tigers up front, allowing the five linebackers to pressure Summit quarterback Talon Roggasch into a nightmarish 2-for-21 passing day with two interceptions. Summit avoided the shutout by returning a fumble recovery for a touchdown late in the game.Pueblo County gave Alamosa its toughest test of the regular season on Oct. 20. The Hornets scored with 18 seconds remaining in that game and went for a game-winning two-point conversion. The Mean Moose stuffed the running play and escaped with a 21-20 win on the Hornets' home field.Pueblo County 34, Summit 7 Summit 0 0 0 7 - 7 P.County 6 15 6 7 - 34PC - Zach Martinez 4 run (kick failed) PC -Myles Martinez 33 run (Z.Martinez pass from J.T. The undefeated and No. 1-ranked Mean Moose will host the championship, their third title appearance under coach Manny Wasinger. They won at Fort Morgan in 2001 for the second state football crown in school history."With about two minutes left (against Florence), the coaches called time out," Espinoza said. "We were scared and they just told us to settle down. That we were going to win this game."Eight plays later, Espinoza caught a 7-yard swing pass from quarterback Clay Garcia for the tying touchdown and then the two teamed again for the winning conversion.Florence traveled to Alamosa on the Saturday after Thanksgiving last fall and pounded the Mean Moose 26-12 en route to the state title.Saturday, it was Alamosa's turn but the Huskies didn't go without a fight.Florence appeared to have won the game with a minute remaining when Frank Morelli intercepted Garcia near the Huskies' 20-yard line. It appeared to preserve a 20-14 Florence advantage but the play was overturned on a roughing the passer call. Alamosa then made the most of its opportunity and drove for the winning points."That's the whole season right there," Garcia said when he thought he had cost the Mean Moose a shot at the title. Instead, Alamosa was awarded the ball on the 13-yard line after the penalty and moved in for the winner.Garcia, the top passer in the state in all classifications, threw for 315 yards on 20 completions, 10 to Espinoza.Alamosa 21, Florence 20 Alamosa 0 7 7 7 - 21 Florence 0 7 0 13 - 20 A - Dustin Bolt 44 pass from Clay Garcia (Jason Espinoza kick) F - Frank Morelli 9 run (Bryce Buderus kick) A - Sonny Yohn 80 pass from Clay Garcia (Espinoza kick) F - Todd Mair 9 pass from Buderus (Buderus kick) F - Buderus 4 run (kick fail) A - Espinoza 7 pass from Garcia (Espinoza pass)STATISTICSAlamosa Florence First downs 13 22 Rushes-yards 13-4 56-168 Passing yards 315 216 Comp-Att-Int 20-36-0 11-18-1 Punts 4-35.3 4--31.5 Penalties-Yards 8-55 3-35 Fumbles-Lost 1-0 0-0INDIVIDUAL STATISTICSRUSHING - A, Garcia 7-(minus 11), John 6-15; F, Buderus 22-30, Garrett Wilson 21-72, Morelli 12-68. Summit gets set to run into Hornets' nest

No. 7 Summit (12-0) at No. 6 Pueblo County (10-2)

• Game plan: Pueblo County running back Zach Martinez crossed the 1,000-yard mark in the Hornets' 41-7 win against Steamboat Springs in the quarterfinals. Martinez, who has gained 1,011 rushing yards, also scored two touchdowns. It is Myles Martinez who leads the Hornets in average per carry (7.9), but he missed some time in the middle of the season and has 759 rushing yards. Joe Pullara has 732 for the Hornets, who are making their first appearance in the semifinals since 2002, when they lost to Palisade. For Summit, this round is uncharted territory, but the Tigers have proven to be playoff worthy. Ryan Eberhart, a 6-foot-5 receiver, is an X factor on a grind-it-out team who can outleap defensive backs and quickly turn a stalled drive into something special. In the Tigers' power run game, Drew Crangle and Jordan Sitkoski get the bulk of the work.

• Extra point: If Pueblo County's offense can break Summit's scoreless streak (three games), the Hornets have the capability to keep on adding points.

The Pueblo Chieftain Online - Pueblo, Colorado U.S.A: "Mines signs Colt
South High School senior Niko Marinucci has received a full-ride scholarship to play basketball at Colorado School of Mines for coach Pryor Orser.
Marinucci is a two-year starter and three-year varsity player for the Colts. The 6-foot, 185-pound sharpshooter averaged 13.6 points per game while leading South to a 20-3 record last season.
'I'm very excited to have the opportunity to attend a school like Mines,' Marinucci said Friday following the Colts' loss to Loveland in the state football playoffs. 'I'm glad we got it done before the basketball season.' Marinucci was named first-team all-South-Central League by the conference's coaches and was honorable mention all-state as a junior. He played in large tournaments across the country with his club team, Colorado Chaos.
'Without a doubt, he is the best pure point guard in the state of Colorado,' Pryor said in a release posted on the Mines website. 'I would envision Niko being someone who breaks all the assist records while playing at Mines.'

Steamboat Springs (10-1) at Pueblo County (9-2), 1 p.m. Saturday, Hornets Stadium

Sunday, November 12, 2006

The Pueblo County Majesty Hornets took care of business Saturday as their
three backs Myles Martinez, Joe Pullara and Zach Martinez along with their brutal offensive slingmen toned the Tigers' defensive manors and took control of the game. They launched themselves into the quarterfinals by beating the Sterling Tigers
28 -14

The Hornets offensive line, center Jarrett Martinez, guards Buddy Gonzales and Brian Harshman, tackles Max Stepan and Kyle Houston, and tight ends Daryk Froman and Myles Meserve

“Myles Martinez rolled up a career-high 181 yards on 19 carries. He was part of a rushing attack that totaled 295 yards on the ground with Pullara adding 78 and Zach Martinez 49. Myles Martinez gave plenty of credit to his linemates.”

Pueblo West High School's Jenica Shippy blocks a spike during a district tournament in 2005. She leads the Cyclones into the Class 4A state volleyball tournament this weekend at the Denver Coliseum.

DENVER - With each passing week, the Pueblo West High School girls volleyball team accomplishes a new goal.
First, the Cyclones won the South-Central League. Next, they won their district tournament. Then last Saturday, they placed second at a regional tournament at Battle Mountain High School and punched their ticket to state.
"It feels really good to make it back to state," said veteran Pueblo West coach Casey King, whose team is 25-1. "We played in a very tough regional tournament and the girls worked hard and got the job done."
This is the third time in school history that West has qualified for state. The Cyclones also played at the Class 4A eight-team tourney in 2001 and 2002. Those two years West didn't make it out of pool play. That is the next new goal King's troops are trying to accomplish.
"We want to make it out of pool play," King said. "That's not going to be easy, but we're ready for the challenge." More on the story >>

Central champions

EDITORIALTHE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN
PUEBLO CHEERS for the Central High School girls' championship for 2006 in Class 4A state gymnastics. The Wildcats won the title with 175.775 points to edge four-time defending champion Sterling last Saturday.
The individual all-around title also was close. Central's Tara Sisson, who won the all-around title as a freshman last fall, finished second this time with 37.350 total points to 38.050 points for Anna Simmons of Mountain Range. "The whole team, together, winning - everyone pulling for each other - that's what was important," Miss Sisson said.
That's the spirit. It takes dedication and hard work to excel at gymnastics, making Central's team title that much more impressive. We're proud of Pueblo's newest state champions.

’Dogs, Cyclones likely to miss out on postseason
By TOM PURFIELDTHE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN
Six wins and four losses probably won't cut it to reach the Class 4A state football playoffs this season.
That's bad news for the teams from Centennial and Pueblo West high schools, which will shoot to finish 6-4 with wins on Friday. Twenty teams in Class 4A have three or fewer losses, likely eliminating teams with four from the 16-team field.
Pueblo West was 5-3 prior to dropping a 34-7 decision at Fountain-Fort Carson last weekend. The Bulldogs have been sitting on four losses for more than a month and have a four-game winning streak.
The seven conference champions are automatic qualifiers and the committee will select and seed the remaining nine teams in the 4A bracket.
South and Pueblo County have already locked up playoff berths. The undefeated and second-ranked Colts clinched their seventh consecutive Foothills League title, and the Hornets landed one of three playoff berths out of the South Metro League. More>>>
