Home Coming Game frenzy helps lift Pueblo West’s Justin Jackson to 24-209 yards rushing with three 3TDs and 1 receiving TD..

East had a chance to change the momentum of the game right before half time with them trailing by one point East junior quarterback Andrew Galvan drove his Eagles down the field 79 yards with in 15 plays which put them on the right on the 5 yard line however the Cyclones stopped East senior Angelo Fresquez who attempted, to no avail, pound the ball up the through Cyclones tuff defense while the clock ran out.

In the second half with East failing to change any momentum in the game the cyclones came out like a hurricane blasting 28 more unanswered points in the second half to give the Pueblo West Home Coming crowd a night to remember.
The Eagles go back to the drawing board and try to figure out what they must do to get over the top. They have the people and the skills but must put them together to get the job done. The Eagles dropped even further down the charts to 1-4 overall 1-3 while the Cyclone improve to 4-1 and 2-1 in the Pikes Peak League

Hitting “it off” in softball.

CCA’s Varsity and Junior Varsity came up big winners with matching scores by beating Corwin at softball . It would seem that the Cesar Chavez Academy sports program is making head waves. As all Pueblo schools, we look forward to watching them blossom in all aspects of sports. Great job to the CCA's sports director Mr. Hernandez for a fine job organizing this kind of success.

Softball diamond is Melissa Lujan's best friend.

By JOE E. CERVITHE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN
At just 5-foot-4 with crystal blue eyes, Melissa Lujan hardly looks like a catcher.
But there is no other place the Pueblo County High School senior would rather be than playing in the dirt behind the batter's box on any softball field in America.
"That's where all the action is," she said. "My knees are torn up. My hands are small and rough. But I love softball, and I love to catch."

In knocking off Canon City 2-0 to run their South-Central League record to 7-0 (8-0 overall), the Bulldogs extended a pair of impressive streaks in the process.

Sunday, September 24, 2006

A warm homecoming turned into a battering of the guest.
Is this anyway to treat your guest at your homecoming game by clobbering them? The Pueblo County Hornets thought so by clobbering the Woodland Park Panthers 63-20 at Hornets Stadium in the South Metro League opener. If I may coin this as with a military attack, I would say the Hornets dropped in like the 82nd Airborne consequently destroying their opponent then bugging out with a complete victory to “Drive On”. These stats say it all… that was a clobbering of the utmost.

To much Widefield for the Cyclones

WIDEFIELD - Pueblo West Cyclones says goodbye to their undefeated dream season. Even though their receiving core was able to put up some yards they just could not manage to turn those yards into enough points.
Now with the pressure off to go undefeated we should see Pueblo West rebound with vengeance next week now that they got the defeat out of thier way.
RECEIVING-Pueblo West: PASSING-Pueblo West: Denojean 12-24-1 174 yards Williams 3-53, Wormington 2-31, Jackson 2-30, Reese 2-23, Vaughn 2-17, Peveler 1-20
Host Widefield stopped the Cyclones 33-14 Friday night at C.A. Foster Stadium.
Cyclones have dropped to 3-1 overall, 1-1 in Pikes Peak League play.

Who says which way the wind blows?
The Bulldog defense did Friday night September 22 while hosting the Central Wildcats at Dutch Clark Stadium for a Centennial 32- Central 14 blow out in the 106th Bell Game...
The Dogs’ defense was controlling the four winds that night. They stopped short of a knock out after leading 32 - O and about 4 minutes left in the game, Central gave it two final Wild Cat pride drives which lead to two touch downs.

I know things go the way they must in time. It was sad to see Central High School senior tailback Bobby Aragon injured on the turf after suffering a knee injury during the first quarter of the Bell Game on Friday at Dutch Clark Stadium. Being injured so early in the game just took the S out of sail for the Wildcats. Bobby is a great play maker team leader and a lead scorer. It is always disappointing to see this happen. I hope he is aright and look forward to seeing him back on the field putting up the numbers.

East Continues to slide

I would like to see Maestas have more looks at receiving. Can you imagine what he can do with 10 passes thrown his way? Look what he did with one.
East: Angelo Fresquez rushed 24-187 major yards
East: Maestas was a nice 1-22 on RECEIVING.

I really do not get Coach Jeremy Kane's statement of Pueblo being a blue collar and what this has to do with the game they play. Most of the high schools in the USA are blue collar. It would seem he feels that being in his statute of coaching a white collar team has an excuse if they lose or come close to losing. I say use this as a rally cry and see which Pueblo team plays the Coronado White collars next and run up the board.

"All Pueblo teams are really blue-collar and they're going to come ready to play. It was an ugly win but it's better than a loss," Coronado coach Jeremy Kane said. "East, that is a much-improved football team. Rick and those guys believe and they're tough."

ESPN.com - NFL/PREVIEW06 - 2006 Broncos preview: "By John Clayton, ESPN.com

Coach Mike Shanahan made several interesting changes on a team that went to the AFC title game last season. He shook up the backfield by letting leading rusher Mike Anderson go. He lost pass-catching tight end Jeb Putzier, who was a key target for quarterback Jake Plummer. He traded away disgruntled wide receiver Ashley Lelie. How will the changes pan out? The answer to that question will dictate whether the Broncos move forward or backward.
The backfield is the biggest question. Shanahan is putting his faith in undrafted halfback Mike Bell over the more explosive Tatum Bell, who hasn't shown consistency on short-yardage plays. Javon Walker finally gives Shanahan a proven second receiver. Defensively, the Broncos are loaded. Defensive coordinator Larry Coyer has a deep rotation of athletes to fit his aggressive defensive game plan. Coyer loves to zone blitz and keep the linemen moving. The secondary is solid, and the linebacking corps remains one of the best in football. The key for the Broncos this season is how well they handle adversity. Everything came together in 2005. The tough games were at home and the Broncos won. Injuries never slowed the team down. Shanahan believes the Broncos could be a better team this year, with a trip to the Super Bowl a possibility. "

The Pig Skin Classic

What a week end for Pueblo High School football. This was one of the most exciting weekend openers I can remember.
This game between the Hornets vs the Cyclones was just as I expected with these two teams going out to that field taking heart soul & rare guts with them and leaving behind not only blood sweat and tears but also memories that will take them in to this season futhermore the rest of their lives.
My hat is off to the Cyclones for pouring on a very good win to start the season and to earn another step forward in the Pig Skin Classic.

Rocky Mountain News: Volleyball: "South Central
Not all the 4A powerhouses are going to come from northeastern Colorado or the Vail Valley. Pueblo West is primed with one of its best teams in years, and the Cyclones are a traditionally strong program.
This season, coach Casey King has two of the top players in the state. Jenica Shippy and Mallory Deneen are good-sized seniors who play opposite each other as outside hitters and setters. Throw in middle blocker Lauren Ottino, and few teams can match Pueblo Wests power.
At Pueblo East, coach Ben Garcia takes over the program after spending the past 14 years as the schools softball coach. He has a good one in 6-1 senior middle blocker Lisa Jones, who is being recruited by several Divison I schools.
Alamosa, Canon City, Pueblo Centennial, Pueblo Central, Pueblo County and Pueblo South are the other league schools. "

Pueblo West freshman runs to victory
Wow are we looking at a future Pueblo Colorado Hall of Fame inductee? To get a jump like this is the way for laying payment. We will definitely keep out yes and ears on Anna Marshall.
One of the meet's biggest surprises was produced by a local runner. Pueblo West High School freshman Anna Marshall won the Class 4A girls race, making a strong move in the final 300 meters to hold off Centennial's Lauren Dorsey-Spitz, a runner-up at last year's state meet, and win the race. Marshall posted a time of 19 minutes, 43.32 seconds, just ahead of Dorsey-Spitz, who clocked a 19:50.67. young lady.

And their off for another great High School Foot Year.
I am sure Centennial will be back next week but they need to learn to hold on to that ball. I hope to see them fine tune that defense because they allowed 200 yards rushing. Was it South just showing us a taste to what will come or were they merely on the right side of Centennial mistakes? We have an exciting season ahead of us with High school football.
