Denver Broncos fire head coach Josh McDaniels

The Denver Broncos fired head coach Josh McDaniels on Monday.

The move comes 28 games into his tenure with the Broncos, in which he went 11-17 despite winning his first six games.
No interim successor was immediately named.

McDaniels' dismissal came one week after team owner Pat Bowlen said he was not interested in making a head coaching change. Less than a day later, however, Bowlen backtracked and said he would reevaluate McDaniels after the season.

Earlier Monday, McDaniels sidestepped a question asking if he was concerned about his job security.

"I am not worried about that," McDaniels said. "I am going to coach as hard as I can because that is my job and that is somebody else's decision."

McDaniels was fined $50,000 by the NFL last month when he revealed he did not immediately report the illegal recording of a San Francisco 49ers practice when the teams played in London in October.

McDaniels accepted responsibility for his role in the illegal recording, which the NFL said was performed solely by video director Steve Scarnecchia, who was fired.

The episode drew a connection to the original Spygate controversy for which the New England Patriots -- where McDaniels was offensive coordinator before joining the Broncos -- and head coach were fined a total $750,000 and stripped of a first-round pick in 2007. McDaniels said there was no connection between the two.

His final game was a 10-6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday that dropped the Broncos to 3-9 this season.

McDaniels is the second Broncos head coach fired in less than two years. He replaced Mike Shanahan, who was ousted after the 2008 season.

Kyle Orton is the AFC Offensive Player of the Week

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton will be named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for games played during the 10th week (Nov. 11-15) of the 2010 season, the National Football League informed the Broncos on Tuesday.

Orton’s selection as AFC Offensive Player of the Week, which came in recognition of his performance in Denver’s 49-29 win against Kansas City on Sunday, is the second such award of his six-year NFL career. He also received the honor for his play in Week 5 of the 2009 season against New England.

Orton completed 22-of-34 (64.7%) passes for 296 yards with a career-high four touchdowns and no interceptions for a 131.5 passer rating against the Chiefs. Leading an offense that tied for the second-most points in a game (49) in club annals, Orton became the first Bronco in team history to post at least 275 passing yards and four passing touchdowns while not being intercepted or sacked.
The former Purdue University standout threw three touchdowns in the first quarter against the Chiefs that tied a club record for a single quarter.
Orton is Denver’s 46th AFC Offensive Player of the Week winner since the award was initiated by the NFL in 1984.

More than 60 climbers turn out for bouldering competition

The Carbondale Recreation and Community Center hosted a bouldering competition at its climbing wall on Saturday.

There were 40 different bouldering “problems” set up on the wall, each with a different point value at the American Bouldering Series event.

The competitor's five scores from completed problems were tallied to determine a winner in each division. Some 67 competitors from throughout Colorado competed, with many locals holding their own against stiff competition.

Winners in youth competition included Ali Pizak (female B division), Parker Hamilton (female C division), Darby Hamilton (female D division), Patrick Mac Kelsall (male B division), Alec Pizak (male C division) and Johan Zeigler (male D division).

The adult open division winners were Summer Igo (female) and Daniel Tompkins (male).

Lyle Martin Alzado (April 3, 1949 – May 14, 1992) was a professional American football defensive lineman of the National Football League who played 15 seasons for the Denver Broncos, Cleveland Browns and Oakland Raiders. He was drafted in the 4th round (79th overall) of the 1971 NFL Draft by the Broncos. He played college football at Yankton College.

Throughout his career, Alzaldo was famous for his intense and intimidating style of play. In 196 career games, he racked up 112.5 sacks and earned two Pro Bowl selections in 1977 and 1978. He would spend his last years in the league with the Oakland Raiders where he would win a championship in Super Bowl XVIII. Alzado died after a battle with cancer in 1992 at the age of 43.

Orange Crush Defense was the 3-4 defense of the Denver Broncos during the 1970s. It was one of the top defenses of its time with Linebackers Randy Gradishar and Tom Jackson, with Gradishar as a potential Hall of Famer.

Other key Crushers were defensive linemen Lyle Alzado, and Rubin Carter, linebackers Bob Swenson and Joe Rizzo, and defensive backs Billy Thompson and Louis Wright. Joe Collier was the defensive co-ordinator, defensive line coach Stan Jones (HOF '91), and head coach Red Miller.

In their Super Bowl XII season in 1977, The Crush had the NFL's number-one defense against the rush though the Broncos were 27th out of 28 teams against the pass.

The team derived their name from their orange, blue and white uniforms and a popular soft drink, Orange Crush.

The Orange Crush uniforms were replaced in 1997 by the team's current Nike/Perisco Blue uniforms.

First came the hugging. Then came the four screaming fist-pumps and the always crowd-pleasing double-fist shake. Then Josh McDaniels jumped into the arms of defensive end Kenny Peterson (notes) the way a 4-year old kid dives into a pile of leaves.

Time-permitting, the Denver Broncos head coach might have ripped off his shirt Hulk Hogan-style and proclaimed he was going to Disneyland.

It was one of the rarest sights you’ll ever see in an NFL October – a Super Bowl-style celebration after a Week 5 victory. To some, McDaniels’ pure merriment after Sunday’s 20-17 overtime win over New England might have seemed a tad disrespectful. Maybe even a little amateur. But I think it’s exactly what this league needs. And the fact that it came after cameras showed Bill Belichick sour-mugging his way off the field only made it more refreshing.

Maybe it didn’t fall perfectly into the coaches mantra of “acting like you’ve been there before,” but it was true emotion in the moment. And in a league where deception and forced composure is viral among head coaches, we should all take unbridled enthusiasm where we can get it. We need some McDaniels joy. We need some good-natured trash-talking, a la the New York Jets’ Rex Ryan. We need someone to say, “It’s OK not to do it like New England. I’m going to be me.”

And for a moment, McDaniels delivered just that, reacting in true fashion to what has been a monumental start. Not only did Sunday’s win over the Patriots push his team to a stunningly unpredictable 5-0 start, but it thrust the Broncos into the “contender” conversation. Their record is no longer propped up on the league’s also-rans. Even if you didn’t think beating Dallas last week was all that impressive, you have to respect a win over New England. Particularly when you know how Belichick feels about facing his former assistant coaches.

Now you look at Denver, and all of the offseason issues couldn’t seem more distant. Jay Cutler (notes)? He might as well be Jake Plummer (notes). In five weeks, McDaniels and the Broncos have found a way to make all the negativity dissipate. Wideout Brandon Marshall (notes) is beloved again. And Kyle Orton (notes)? His numbers through five games, factored along with the undefeated start, have to put him in the league’s top 10 quarterback conversation. Unthinkable, but true.

So McDaniels has earned the right for a little celebration. He’s deserving of some unbridled passion. But if you’d rather have a guy with a dead-fish handshake and who coaches like he’s auditing your taxes, I can think of a few places for you. In a refreshing turn, Denver isn’t it.

I received 40 text message on top of emails and phone calls on this topic. I guess Mike was responsible for the all the injuries the Broncos sustained and on top of that note Mike Shanahan was responsible for drafting personal like Jay Cutler, Rookie Peyton Hillis and the rest of the tail backs who were injured also you can not for get both Champ Bailey's and brother Boss' injuries.
I think the firing was a little immature. One more year with this young up and coming team would have solidified Mr Shanahan's legacy as a winner again. Now what do we have to look forward as a new coach? Bum Philips? Wade Phillips? Marty Ball? Who?
At least with Mike, we knew anything could happen. If I did not bleed Orange and Blue and Mike got the job in San Diego , I'd turn to be a Bolts fan ugg! or If the Chiefs picked him up I'd turn in to a Chiefs fan ugg! God at least he will not go to the Raiders. What ever team Mike will lead , you can bet your last buck that he will now be gunning for the Bowlan's Broncos along coincide with Al Davies' Raiders. Way to go Bowlan

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The Denver Broncos honored cornerback Champ Bailey as their man of the year Friday. They hope he can be man of the day Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Bailey's teammates selected him their 2008 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, and they wouldn't mind if he celebrated by suiting up against the Chiefs. Bailey has missed five games with a groin injury and is a game-time decision for Sunday.

"I think I've progressed, but the thing is it's moving so slow. It's very frustrating but I've got to deal with it as it is," Bailey said.

Bailey suffered a slight groin tear in the Broncos' 41-7 loss at New England Oct. 20. Coming into this season, Bailey had not missed more than two consecutive games in his nine-year career.

Linebacker D.J. Williams, who sprained his left knee against Miami on Nov. 6, is doubtful for Sunday.

Williams practiced this week, but like Bailey, his activity was limited Thursday and Friday.

Middle linebacker Nate Webster, who missed the last four games with a sprained MCL in his left knee, practiced this week and is listed as probable.

Chiefs notes: Bradley out for Denver game

One of the Chiefs’ best and unexpected weapons will miss Sunday’s game at Denver because of a lingering calf injury. Mark Bradley, a receiver who is third on the team with 24 receptions since the Chiefs acquired him two months ago, will be out of the lineup against the Broncos.

Coach Herm Edwards said Friday that Bradley’s injury isn’t a long-term concern and that the team hopes he can return next week against Miami.

“We’re being cautious with him right now,” Edwards said.

Edwards said that Bradley has aggravated the injury suffered two weeks ago and that coaches decided to rest him.

Getting 'Marshalled'

At 6-5 and 230 pounds, Denver receiver Brandon Marshall, left, has been called "a defensive lineman playing wide receiver." At 33, Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis still deals out plenty of punishment.

There you are. An isolated, beaten cornerback sprawled out, face first, on the field. You have a mouth full of dirt and grass. Your hands are grasping nothing but air. You have divots from Brandon Marshall's speeding cleats firing back into your eyes.

Terrifying thought.

It's happened dozens of time since 2006 and it's bound to happen hundreds more times to earnest but unfortunate defensive backs. It should be referred to as "being Marshalled."

Indeed, having Denver Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall break a would-be tackle and rumble down the field for more yardage or even a touchdown is a common phenomenon in the NFL. It happens several times a Sunday.

"Brandon Marshall is a defensive lineman playing wide receiver," Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers said. "He wants to inflict punishment on you. He wants you to try to tackle him so he can shove you off of him and get more yards." At 6-5 and 230 pounds, the sculpted Marshall has many things going for him that contribute to his uncanny talent of being able to break tackles and get yardage after the catch. Not only is Marshall big, but he's very fast and he plays mean. He plays with a purpose. Catching the ball is just half the deal for Marshall. Once he gets the ball in his mitts, Marshall is full steam ahead. He is all moving parts, with three or four defenders hanging on him. Be the first to meet a football-toting Marshall and be sure to be bruised and battered. And don't expect to bring him down. Not by yourself, at least.

The Mesa State College football team wore the maroon and yellow uniforms of the late 1970s and early 1980s for the second time this season Saturday night and won for the second time in them. This time, the Mavericks defeated CSU-Pueblo 26-3 in an RMAC game at Stocker Stadium.

“I felt we controlled the game, but we left some points on the field,” Mesa State coach Joe Ramunno said. “Penalties again stopped (us). We’re fortunate we have a great kicker and a good field goal team.”

The Mavericks (5-2, 5-0 RMAC) piled up 454 yards in total offense, including 304 on the ground, but reached the end zone only twice, thanks in part to 10 penalties for 88 yards. Mesa State senior kicker Jared Keating had a school-record four field goals, including a 41-yarder.

Mesa junior running back Bobby Coy ran for a season-high 237 yards to put him over the 1,000-yard mark for the season (1,111). It was the fifth consecutive game Coy rushed for more than 100 yards.

“We adjusted well to their scheme,” Coy said. “I have to give credit to the offensive line. They do it for me. They played well against a talented front.”

About the only thing Coy didn’t do was score a touchdown. Senior tight end Maurice Manley scored both TDs for the Mavs.

Manley caught a 15-yard pass from Phil Vigil in the second quarter for a 7-0 lead and a 14-yard pass from Vigil in the fourth quarter for a 23-3 cushion. Manley had four receptions for 52 yards. Vigil completed 13 of 27 passes for 150 yards with one interception.

It was the Mavericks’ only turnover of the night.

The two touchdowns and four field goals were more than enough for the Mesa State defense, which allowed season-low of three points and a season-low of 204 yards in total offense.

The Mavericks held their fourth consecutive opponent under 100 rushing yards and haven’t allowed a running back to run for 100 yards or more since Abilene Christian’s Bernard Scott did in the 2007 Division II playoffs.

The defense did the job without senior defensive end Nic Pade, who is out with a knee injury, but is expected to return in two to three weeks.

Sophomore Tony Kelly started in place of Pade and made 3.5 tackles, including 1.5 for a loss.

“I’ve been waiting a long time for this,” Kelly said. “I’ve worked hard in practice and felt I could step up. We have great coaches and great chemistry.”

Mesa’s defense picked off two passes.

Junior linebacker Spencer McAdoo had one on the ThunderWolves’ possession after Mesa’s second touchdown that put the Mavs up 23-3.

McAdoo, who dropped an interception earlier in the game, returned it 32 yards before going out of bounds.

“I’ve been having trouble with thumb injuries,” McAdoo said. “I’m basically walking with two casts on my arms. I was trying to figure out which hand I can hold the ball. I finally realized I’m not gripping this, so I ducked out of bounds.”

Keating’s 41-yard field goal on the Mavs’ next possession put the game out of reach.

The ThunderWolves (2-4, 1-4 RMAC) hung around behind their defense, keeping Mesa State off the scoreboard until the second quarter when Manley caught his first touchdown.

Coy went over the 1,000-yard mark on his first carry of the third quarter, but Pueblo’s Aaron Hernandez intercepted Vigil and returned it into Mesa territory. It led to a 48-yard field goal and a 13-3 Mesa lead.

Eagles to play ‘new kid on block” at Pueblo on Saturday

An overflow crowd is anticipated Saturday when the Chadron State College football team tangles with “the new kid on the block” during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest in Pueblo, Colo.

The Eagles will be the first home RMAC opponent of Colorado State-Pueblo, which has revived its football program this fall after dropping the sport in 1984.

Kickoff will be at 1 p.m. at the new Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl.

Understandably, Pueblo fans are excited about their team. The ThunderWolves have a 2-0 record after downing Panhandle State of Oklahoma 24-13 at home on Sept. 6 and then surprising Fort Lewis 37-7 in Durango on Saturday night. They are the only undefeated team in the conference.

The score at Fort Lewis was 7-7 at halftime, but the Thunderwolves came up with six turnovers in the second half to crush the Skyhawks. The Pueblo placekicker, freshman Kyle Major, was named the RMAC Special Teams Player of the Week after booting three field goals in the second half.

The Wolves also scored three touchdowns in the second half.

Pueblo isn’t exactly restarting its program from scratch. The school has obtained strong community support and reportedly already has the full quota of scholarships. Nearly 10,000 attended the season-opener against Panhandle State.

The head coach is John Wristen, a graduate of CSU-Pueblo who was an assistant coach at the University of Colorado, Northwestern and UCLA. His assistants include offensive coordinator Wayne McGinn, the head coach at Adams State the past eight years, and running backs coach Steve Sewell, a running back for the Denver Broncos from 1985-92 after being the team’s No. 1 draft choice following a great career at Oklahoma.

More than 30 of the more than 100 players listed on the roster are transfers, including five from Glendale Community College in Arizona and five from Adams State, who followed McGinn to Pueblo.

One of the Adams State transfers is quarterback Bobby Washington, last year’s RMAC Offensive Freshman of the Year after completing 82 of 160 passes for 1,022 yards and five touchdowns.

Washington started the first two games, but suffered a broken arm against Fort Lewis, according to a story in the Pueblo newspaper. He was replaced by Sean Gavin, a freshman from Canyon Country, Calif. Gavin completed eight of 11 passes for 43 yards and rushed five times for 10 yards against the Skyhawks.

CSC coach Bill O’Boyle said his team was lethargic and made too many mistakes in the early going during its 37-26 victory over Adams State on Saturday.

“We didn’t do anything right in the first half, but fortunately, bounced back,” O’Boyle told those attending the Eagles Booster Club luncheon on Monday. “We dodged a huge bullet.”

On the bright side, O’Boyle noted that the running game “came alive” in the second half.

“Our offensive line was knocking them off the ball at times,” O’Boyle said. “That’s something we hadn’t seen in Adams State’s games against Montana State or Southern Utah.”

The Eagles had an injury against Adams State. Richard Smock, a senior offensive guard, suffered a sprained ankle and is questionable for Saturday’s game. If he can’t play, his replacement will likely be sophomore Jake Finnerty.

Saturday’s game between the two schools, which is the first-ever meeting, will be televised by Altitude. The “RMAC Football Game of the Week” will be shown live on Altitude 2, and Altitude will air a tape delay broadcast on Sunday. For Great Plains Communications subscribers in Chadron, Ch. 4 will air the football game live on Saturday. Altitude 2 can be seen on Ch. 444 on the Dish Network and Ch. 682 on DirecTV.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Nine-year-old Jericho Scott is a good baseball player – too good, it turns out. The right-hander has a fastball that tops out at about 40 mph. He throws so hard that the Youth Baseball League of New Haven told his coach that the boy could not pitch any more. When Jericho took the mound anyway last week, the opposing team forfeited the game, packed its gear and left, his coach said

Officials for the three-year-old league, which has eight teams and about 100 players, said they will disband Jericho's team, redistributing its players among other squads, and offered to refund $50 sign-up fees to anyone who asks for it. They say Jericho's coach, Wilfred Vidro, has resigned.

But Vidro says he didn't quit and the team refuses to disband. Players and parents held a protest at the league's field on Saturday urging the league to let Jericho pitch.

“He's never hurt any one,” Vidro said. “He's on target all the time. How can you punish a kid for being too good?”

The controversy bothers Jericho, who says he misses pitching.

“I feel sad,” he said. “I feel like it's all my fault nobody could play.”

Jericho's coach and parents say the boy is being unfairly targeted because he turned down an invitation to join the defending league champion, which is sponsored by an employer of one of the league's administrators.

Jericho instead joined a team sponsored by Will Power Fitness. The team was 8-0 and on its way to the playoffs when Jericho was banned from pitching.

“I think it's discouraging when you're telling a 9-year-old you're too good at something,” said his mother, Nicole Scott. “The whole objective in life is to find something you're good at and stick with it. I'd rather he spend all his time on the baseball field than idolizing someone standing on the street corner.”

League attorney Peter Noble says the only factor in banning Jericho from the mound is his pitches are just too fast.

“He is a very skilled player, a very hard thrower,” Noble said. “There are a lot of beginners. This is not a high-powered league. This is a developmental league whose main purpose is to promote the sport.”

Noble acknowledged that Jericho had not beaned any batters in the co-ed league of 8- to 10-year-olds, but say parents expressed safety concerns.

“Facing that kind of speed” is frighteneing for beginning players, Noble said.

League officials say they first told Vidro that the boy could not pitch after a game on Aug. 13. Jericho played second base the next game on Aug. 16. But when he took the mound Wednesday, the other team walked off and a forfeit was called.

League officials say Jericho's mother became irate, threatening them and vowing to get the league shut down.

“I have never seen behavior of a parent like the behavior Jericho's mother exhibited Wednesday night,” Noble said.

Scott denies threatening any one, but said she did call the police.

League officials suggested that Jericho play other positions, or pitch against older players or in a different league.

Local attorney John Williams was planning to meet with Jericho's parents Monday to discuss legal options.

“You don't have to be learned in the law to know in your heart that it's wrong,” he said. “Now you have to be punished because you excel at something?”

Placekicker Jason Elam has spent 15 seasons with the Denver Broncos, but Friday he agreed to return home to Atlanta, where he'll likely finish his stellar — and historic — NFL career with the Falcons.

Elam, 38, signed a four-year, $9 million contract ($3.3 million guaranteed) to take over from highly respected 47-year-old Morten Andersen.

The Falcons hope to gain stability at his position, which has been problematic in the early stages of the past two seasons until Andersen, the NFL's all-time leading scorer, was summoned off the golf course to bail out failed gambles on inexperienced kickers.

Punter Michael Koenen, a restricted free agent whose rights have been retained by the Falcons, is projected to handle kickoff duties again.

Elam's departure from Denver will be a sentimental loss. He won his share of games for the Broncos, tied Tom Dempsey for the NFL's longest field goal made (63 yards) and became part of the fabric of the franchise. Elam has 1,786 career points and has scored at least 100 points in every season.

His arrival in Atlanta will be a sentimental return.

Elam grew up in Snellville and played at Brookwood High. His mother still lives in the area, and he has other family in the region. The devout and civically active kicker spent his offseasons in metro Atlanta before moving to Denver full time in 2003.

The locale, kicking in a dome, the new coaching staff and a franchise excited to compensate him handsomely were the selling points for Elam not to return to Denver or take a trip to Seattle, which also wanted him to visit. Elam met with Falcons officials Wednesday and Thursday.

Though Elam has lost some of his deep punch on his kicks, he still has a strong leg and has been incredibly accurate (80.6 percent) in his career. The past two seasons, he averaged a 90 percent conversion rate on field goals.

Jason Elam of the Denver Broncos tied the 28-year-old NFL record of Tom Dempsey on Oct. 25, 1998 with a 63 yard field goal. The kick came at the end of the first half of a game with the Jacksonville Jaguars at Denver's Mile High Stadium. With a 37-24 victory, the Broncos became 7-0 for the first time in club history. Originally only a 58-yard attempt, the Broncos were issued a 5 yard penalty for delaying the game and the ball was placed on the Jaguars 47 yard line with only a few seconds on the clock. Elam's kick delighted the Denver fans that were present to witness the history making effort.

When asked why he didn't back up a yard and go for the record-breaker at 64 yards, Elam said, "Well, that gets kind of scary when you do that. Everything is so precise with the snapper and holder. My snapper (David Diaz-Infante) is usually so good that he can snap to where (holder) Tom (Rouen) doesn't even have to move the laces at all. I never like to mess with that."

Elam said he knew his record kick would have the distance. It was just a matter of physics. "I just tried to do all the fundamentals correctly and keep the ball going straight because I really did feel I could get the ball there," he said. "But those goal posts looked really skinny from where I was standing." Elam said he is just happy to tie Dempsey, who kicked with a shoe specially fitted to his clubbed foot. "I am perfectly happy with being in his company," said Elam.

CSU-Pueblo's Lindsay Black, the 2008 RMAC SHOOTOUT Most Valuable Player, led the Thunderwolves to a 70-54 victory over Nebraska-Kearney Saturday night at the State Fair Events Center. Black tallied 17 points, nine rebounds, five blocks, three assists and two steals in the championship game to help CSUP clinch a berth to the NCAA North Central Regional.

The ThunderWolves have drawn the eighth and lowest seed in the North Central region, pitting them against the one-seed University South Dakota, the regional host for the NCAA Division II national tournament, the NCAA announced Sunday night.

South Dakota, 28-1 won the North Central Conference, beating North Dakota in the championship game Sunday.

The ThunderWolves earned an automatic bid by taking the RMAC Championship Saturday. Despite that, two of the teams the ThunderWolves defeated, Fort Lewis and Nebraska-Kearney, each received higher seeds in the regional (number-four and number-five, respectively), and will play one another in the first round of the national tournament. If the ThunderWolves are able to defeat South Dakota, they will take on the winner of the Fort Lewis/Kearney matchup.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference has announced that CSU-Pueblo senior Lindsay Black has been recognized as the RMAC Defensive Player of the Year.

Black, who was also recognized as an all-RMAC first team selection, as well, led the conference in blocked shots by a huge margin, averaging 2.11 blocks per game, nearly double that of the second-ranked player in the conference, UCCS' Tonya Tripp, who blocked 1.34 shots per game.

Black was also one of the top thieves in the conference, finishing second with 2.04 steals per game, just .04 behind steals leader, Regis' Breanne Burley. As a rebounder, Black led the ThunderWolves with 6.1 boards per game, finishing 17th in the conference in that category.

Overall, Black was the only player in the conference to be in the top 20 individually in all three major defensive categories (steals, blocks, rebounds).

Offensively, Black led the ThunderWolves with 13.1 points per game, as well.

Black's recognition marks the second consecutive year that a ThunderWolf has been recognized as a defensive player of the year. Last season, Jonnie Draper was selected as the RMAC West Division Defensive Player of the Year.

Also recognized by the RMAC were junior forward Mary Rehfeld and sophomore center Sarah Staggs, who were each named to the RMAC all-West Division team as honorable mention selections.

ALAMOSA — Every match that each San Luis Valley prep wrestler has faced this season now come into the picture as the brackets are seeded for the state qualifying regional tournaments that come to a climax on Saturday.

At stake are team and individual regional championships and medals and, more importantly, qualification into the 2008 Colorado High School Wrestling State Championships at The Pepsi Center next Thursday — the largest high school sports venue in the state with close to 20,000 fans jammed into the facility for the Saturday night finals.

To get there, wrestlers have to finish among the top four in their weight classes at the regional tournaments — the higher the finish, the better, in order to improve seeding at state.

This is what the wrestlers have been working so hard to achieve, with visions of state medals and the ultimate prize, a state championship, fueling their efforts.

With three of the four state classifications represented by the Valley’s schools, the situation at the state tournament becomes non-stop wrestling from start to finish for SLV wrestling fans.

First, however, come Saturday’s concluding rounds of regional matches at three locations for Valley wrestlers.

The No. 1 ranked Alamosa Mean Moose, pursuing their third straight 4A State Championship, will be at the State Fair Events Center in Pueblo, with the finals projected to start at 6:30 p.m. with the Parade of Champions.

Their main challenger for the regional team title is No. 5 ranked Pueblo West in the field of 18 teams. There are plenty of highly ranked individuals in almost every weight class to challenge the Maroons.

The Mean Moose lost exceptional sophomore Justin Mortensen, ranked No. 7 at 103 lbs. by On the Mat, when he suffered a torn ACL during practice a little over a week ago. As a result, senior defending state champion at 103, Jesse Meis (34-2), ranked No. 1 at 112, has dropped down to 103 where he has wrestled on several occasions this season.

Finding the money for high school sports is difficult

Ok here it is. Pueblo is known for their love of football. Now at least in the last five years the Pueblo sports teams have shown that they can compete again and beat the Colorado Springs preps whom for many years have dominated the playoffs and crowns. Finally the city has pulled together a CSU Pueblo college football team. I do not know bout you but I would like to see our prep footballers have the ability to continue to compete at a high level. Everyone should understand in order to compete and stay healthy, the player will need the top of the line equipment. Now! would it be great to have more of our home home bred football heroes playing for our own Colorado University Pueblo 's Thunder wolves while grabbing those scholarships? Well yeah ! Central High School head football coach Dave Craddock looks as comfortable on a golf course as Tiger Woods looks in shoulder pads.

But like Woods, Craddock's time on the links is spent trying to make money. Not through winning tournaments or betting buddies $5 a hole, but by hosting a tournament each year to raise money for his football program.

All high school coaches, and coaches at the middle school and club levels, too, spend as much time fundraising as they do coaching. And all agree there is no “fun” in fundraising.

"No coach just coaches anymore," Craddock said. "You have to raise money just to get your teams on the field. If you don't, your programs would fold."

The lady Thunderwolves volleyball team experienced some disappointment from their losses this past weekend.
In their last home tournament of the season the women lost three of the four matches against Ft. Lewis and three of the five matches against Mesa State College.

Bryan W. Hart had the game's defensive gem and had three hits and two RBI in the loss to CSU Pueblo.

Former San Bernardino Valley College pitching ace Juan Gomez scattered five hits in eight innings on the mound Friday as Colorado State-Pueblo opened its 2008 baseball season with a 7-2 victory over previously-unbeaten Cal State San Bernardino in a non-conference game at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.
A sun-baked crowd of more than 200 fans watched Gomez handcuff the Coyotes batters while the Thunderwolves pecked away at CSUSB ace Matt Long for three early runs and never trailed as they picked up their first win while the Coyotes are now 5-1.
The same two teams will meet at 4 p.m. Saturday at ACUP following a noon game between Cal Poly Pomona and the T-Wolves.
Gomez, who was 11-1 at SBVC last year, struck out four and walked three before leaving the game in favor of Chino's Chris Garcia in the ninth. Garcia yielded a hit but the T-Wolves defense turned a game-ending double play to snuff out any Coyotes hopes of a comeback.
CSUSB was trailing 3-0 in the fourth when the team put together its only runs of the game. Danny Soles led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Johnnie Haas. With two out, Gomez walked Chris Olsen and both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Senior first baseman Bryan W. Hart then delivered a single that scored Soles and Olsen to make it 3-2.
Hart was the offensive and defensive star of the day for CSUSB, with three of the team's six hits, two RBI. He made the defensive play of the game, diving to his left to stab a hard shot down the first base line and make the putout unassisted. Soles had two of CSUSB's six hits in the contest.
Long (1-1) went 5.2 innings and gave up four runs, three of them earned, while striking out seven and walking three. Michael Leal, Eric Meyerholtz and David Martin finished up on the mound for CSUSB.
Before the game, both teams participated in a special memorial tribute to Ed Wain, a long-time supporter of SBVC and Cal State San Bernardino baseball as well as the San Bernardino Spirit Class A club. John Rozzi sang the national anthem. The program included a tribute by Rich Dauer, former Colton HS and SBVC star who want on to play for USC and the Baltimore Orioles. He is now a coach with the National League champion Colorado Rockies.

ALAMOSA — The Alamosa Mean Moose boys continued their winning ways on Friday as they won their third game in a row, 52-42, over the Pueblo East Eagles.

The scoring started quickly as Alamosa junior guard Ryan Esquibel connected on a jumper. East’s Jordan Gregory countered with an identical one of his own to tie the game.

The Eagles’ Tony Plascencia then hit a lay-up but junior post Chris Green didn’t want to have any of that but he was fouled on his attempt for a lay-up and hit both free throws to tie the game. That was when the three-point shooting contest began. East’s Nick Taibi hit a 3-pointer only to be countered by Alamosa senior Brandon Albert. Gregory then hit a lay-up to put East back on top but that’s when Esquibel took control, hitting not just one but three 3-points in the next several minutes as Alamosa took a 14-12 lead into the second quarter.

The second quarter was a close one, too, but with the Maroons’ slim lead they never gave it up as they worked the lead up to 6 points late in the half, 25-19. Taibi was able to hit one of two from the charity stripe to close the half with a score of 25-20 in favor of Alamosa.

The Moose continued to pull away in the third quarter as junior guard Derek Medina got into the 3-point shootout and by the end of the third quarter the Maroons held a 35-27 lead.

The fourth quarter wasn’t like the first as the Eagles finally landed. Esquibel took the ball down court to widen the lead to 10 points, but Gregory hit a 3-pointer to close the gap to 37-30. East’s Bret Spradley then hit two 3-pointers to make the score 37-36.

Green followed by taking the ball into the key for a short jumper to widen the lead to three with 4:22 remaining. The Eagles came right back and were about to score but had the ball knocked loose and out of bounds. After a few seconds of hesitation, the official called the ball in for Alamosa.

However, the Moose weren’t able to capitalize on the play as Taibi stole the ball and connected on yet another 3-pointer to tie the game at 39-39 with 2:59 remaining.

Medina took control on the next round of action as he hit a 3-pointer but as the ball was in the air a foul was called on East to give Alamosa the basket and possession of the ball. Albert was able to capitalize as he hit a jumper to make the score 44-39. Taibi countered with another 3-pointer to close the gap to 46-42, but with time running out East’s only plan was to foul and Alamosa was perfect from the line, nailing 6 out of 6 shots down the final stretch to seal the win..

Esquibel lead the Moose scoring with 15 points, and Medina was next with 12. Green had 11 points, Dakota Valerio had 7 and Albert had 5. Bob Cody rounded out the scoring with 2. The Eagles won the 3-point shooting contest as they had 7 while Alamosa had 6.

The Moose travel to Cañon City on Tuesday and then host league leading Pueblo South on Valentine’s Day.

However on the girl side of the ball #4 East Eagles expands their domination by beating the the Mean Moose girls.

Gary Zimmerman joins John Elway in Pro Football Hall of Fame

DENVER - Gary Zimmerman had mixed feelings about becoming the second Denver Broncos player in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.

"I'm happy to be joining John Elway, but at the same time I'm sad because there's so many other Broncos who deserve to be in the Hall, too," Zimmerman told The Associated Press in an interview from his home near Bend, Ore.

One of those who he felt should be in the Hall is linebacker Randy Gradishar, who failed to gain enough votes in his 20th and final year of eligibility as a modern era candidate on Saturday.

Now, Gradishar will have to pin his hopes on the veterans committee, where the list of names is longer and the odds slimmer.

"Randy definitely deserves it. Let's keep our fingers crossed for him," Zimmerman said.

As for his own selection, Zimmerman was stunned.

"You know, there aren't any stats for offensive linemen, and then there's the fact I didn't talk to the media, so there were a bunch of negatives," said Zimmerman, who quit talking to reporters after getting burned during his playing days in Minnesota from 1986-92.

He fit right in with the O-linemen's vow of public silence during his days in Denver from 1993-97, where he won a Super Bowl ring.

Zimmerman began his career with the L.A. Express of the USFL before reporting to the Vikings, where he began a streak of 169 straight starts that lasted until 1996, when surgery sidelined him. He was one of just a handful of players chosen for two NFL all-decade teams, the 1980s and 1990s, earned first-or second-team All-Pro honours eight times and was selected to play in seven Pro Bowls.

Still, he insisted he wasn't expecting a phone call Saturday informing him he'd been selected to the Hall of Fame, where Elway is the only Broncos player ever enshrined.

"It was like a dream, like it wasn't real, like I was in the 'Twilight Zone,"' Zimmerman said. "There was so many other great players that were up for induction, so I figured I was going to have to wait my turn."

An avid outdoorsman and winter sports enthusiast, Zimmerman has spent his retirement enjoying snowboarding and snowmobiling although injuries from his playing career have started to crimp his enjoyment of those activities, he said.

"Lately, I've been driving the plow eight hours a day," said Zimmerman, who spent much of Saturday clearing the snow from an easement road leading to his house. "I've got drifts that cover all but about three inches of my six-foot fence."

Ex-Ram Warner wants NFL to expand probe of Patriots

Looking back, quarterback Kurt Warner says Super Bowl XXXVI in New Orleans is a blur. The underdog New England Patriots simply outschemed Warner's St. Louis Rams, parading out six and at times seven defensive backs and roughing up the Rams' sleek receivers to slow down an offense then dubbed "The Greatest Show on Turf." St. Louis, Warner says, just got beat. The final score read 20-17. That result can't be changed.

But for peace of mind, the two-time MVP wants the league to investigate reports that the Patriots might have benefited from a videotape of the Rams' final practice before that Super Bowl six years ago.

Then: Randy Gradishar was the only Ring of Fame inductee in 1989, in recognition of a 10-year career at linebacker with the Broncos. During his career, Gradishar was a seven-time Pro Bowler, the most by any Bronco at the end of his career, and he is also the all-time leader in tackles for Denver, finishing with 2,049. Gradishar never missed a game, playing in 145 in a row. He accounted for 33 turnovers in his career (20 INTs and 13 fumble recoveries) and was voted the Defensive Player of the Year in 1978 by AP, UPI, Pro Football Weekly and NEA (George Halas Award). His teammates also voted him team defensive MVP in 1978 and 1980. While at Ohio State, Gradishar was referred to by his head coach -- the legendary Woody Hayes -- as "the best linebacker I ever coached at Ohio State." Randy was a three-year starter for the Buckeyes and was named to every All-America team following his senior season, as well as being an Academic All-America selection, graduating with a degree in distributive education. Gradishar was also the president of the Denver Broncos Youth Foundation from 1982-92. He was inducted in 1998 into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Now: Gradishar joined the Phil Long Dealerships as Leadership Manager in December 1997, a position in which he helps train, equip and support employees in the quest to achieve their goals and objectives. A temporary restraining order was issued Monday requiring the star wide receiver to stay at least 500 feet from a woman who alleged he committed ‘‘battery causing serious injury’’ to her at her Florida home on Jan. 6.

Moss denied the allegation by Rachelle Washington, which he called ‘‘this situation of extortion,’’ and said he was ‘‘furious’’ about it. The restraining order was issued in the Broward County 17th Judicial Circuit of Florida.

The Patriots [team stats] were comfortably curled up on their couches Sunday night, halfway through “The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” when the next victim on their hit list touched down in San Diego. An estimated 10,000 fans were waiting to greet the Chargers as they got off their buses, hobbled into the team complex and headed for the trainer’s room.

Some fans had been waiting on lounge chairs in the parking lot for six hours। According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chargers theme song played repeatedly over loud speakers. The charged-up San Diego fans would have been wearing championship T-shirts and hats except for one small problem:

Rivers questionable for AFC title game with knee injury
SAN DIEGO – The euphoria of the San Diego Chargers' stunning win against the defending Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts was replaced by reality Monday.

While two-time NFL rushing champion LaDainian Tomlinson said he should be able to play in Sunday's AFC championship game, the Chargers know quarterback Philip Rivers will be gimpy with a sprained right knee if he's able to play against the undefeated New England Patriots.

Rivers was listed as questionable. He injured his medial collateral ligament when he landed awkwardly after completing a 56-yard screen pass to Darren Sproles for a touchdown on the final play of the third quarter in Sunday's 28-24 upset of the Colts.

Coach Norv Turner compared Rivers' situation with that of tight end Antonio Gates. Gates dislocated his left big toe in a wild-card win over Tennessee, sat out practice all week and then played against the Colts.

“Right now, it's probably questionable in terms of playing in the game, but he's got a chance,” Turner said Monday. “That will be a day-to-day thing and we'll monitor it as the week goes on.”

Rivers was having tests on the knee and wasn't available to the media। He completed 14 of 19 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns against the Colts before leaving. Rivers went to the locker room during the game and returned to the sideline with a brace on the knee, but didn't get back in.

Taibi, the school's all-time 3-point leader with 226, was 6-for-10 from 3-point range. Banks scored 11 of his points in the second half as Northern Colorado (6-6, 1-0 Big Sky Conference) snapped a four-game losing streak.

Vinnie McGhee had four 3-pointers and 19 pointers to lead Sacramento State (2-9, 0-1). Clark Woods had 11, but Big Sky Conference leading scorer Justin Williams, a 17-point a game scorer, managed only four points.

Sacramento State lost it's 14th straight road game. The Hornets last won away from home on Dec. 30, 2006 when they beat Northern Colorado.

Northern Colorado led 31-28 at the half and quickly built a 13 point lead in the second half.

McGhee's 3-pointer and a short jumper got Sacramento State to within six points, 61-55, before Northern Colorado responded with an 11-2 run keyed by Banks' emphatic dunk off a rebound and Taibi's two 3-pointers and layup off a steal. The Bears pulled away to a 71-57 lead with 1:58 remaining.

Monday night mouthiness creates a flap in Denver

Chargers QB Philip Rivers has been known to occasionally open his mouth during games.

Philip Rivers got the Denver Broncos bucking mad, and he doesn't really understand why.

“I don't know what the big deal is,” the Chargers quarterback said yesterday.

Two days after the Chargers beat them, the Broncos were still talking about Rivers and his mouth.

“I don't really care for the guy, first of all,” Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey told the Rocky Mountain News yesterday. “He's not a respectable guy right now, because you talk too much trash and do this and that, but you're really not a great player in this league right now. You're surrounded by great players, but you're not a great player.

“I think he needs to understand where he stands in this league – on his team first and foremost. They've got a lot of classy guys on that team. He kind of represents the classless guy on that team. He's definitely lost my respect.”

Even before Monday night's game Bailey told ESPN he didn't like Rivers because of how much Rivers talks.

In fact, someone told Rivers about the ESPN report during the game and he asked Bailey on the field, “Champ, what's up? I thought we were tight.”

Rivers talks almost constantly on the field. He considers it part of the game and loves getting into exchanges with opponents.

“I talked no more in that game than any game in my life,” he said. “ . . . We get after our guys more in practice than in that game.”

Bailey and other Broncos spoke yesterday in response to questions about Rivers being caught on camera yelling toward the Broncos during the fourth quarter, long after he had been taken out of the game in the 23-3 rout.

After a failed fourth-down pass by Jay Cutler, Rivers was shown going a few steps onto the field to greet linebackers Shaun Phillips and Matt Wilhelm. While doing so, he was looking toward the Broncos.

“We get a fourth-down stop,” Rivers recalled yesterday. “I'm not in the game anymore, so I'm way into the defense more than I normally am. . . . Matt Wilhelm and Shaun Phillips, those guys have been jawing the whole game with them. We get a good stop. They are jawing. I'm not anywhere involved. I come out to congratulate them on the stop, and while I'm out there, yeah, there is some eye contact, but I'm saying, 'Atta baby' to Matt Wilhelm and Shaun Phillips. Sure there is eye contact. Maybe there is a smirk. But I am speaking to my guys.”

Cutler could be seen at midfield looking in their direction, and Phillips said yesterday that it was Cutler who started the talking.

“It's funny,” Phillips said. “Philip walked out and told us not to say anything, that we're winning. And Cutler is yelling. . . . Cutler does a lot of talking. I thought it was funny they were talking and losing.”

Phillips said in the fourth quarter Cutler was “just letting us know he wasn't a punk. I respect that. He was letting us know he'd see us next time.”

In the exchange, Wilhelm was seen waving good-bye to the Broncos, and Phillips was pointing at the scoreboard.

But there was immediate reaction from the television commentators and in the ensuing days from fans about how the behavior was unbecoming for Rivers.

Rivers has heard the talk for more than a year that he gets too riled up during games. He has long maintained it's simply how he plays and that it even helps him.

“I'm not going to change,” he said. “ . . . I'm not saying I'm trying to be the guy who goes nuts and acts crazy. That's not who I am. But the thing is there are no bad intentions. It's all in fun.”

Other Chargers defended Rivers.

“What they've got to understand is Philip is a football player,” tight end Antonio Gates said. “If they put him in that category it wouldn't be a problem. But since he's a quarterback, quarterbacks stereotypically shouldn't say or do or act a certain kind of way on the field.

“That's the thing that's not known about him. We know him as a person. He does it in the locker room, in practice, on the field. He plays the game with his heart. That's why he's that way.”

Rivers also explained yesterday another time he was caught talking by ESPN's cameras on Monday. Rivers said after a play in which Broncos linebacker Jamie Winborn had gotten past fullback Andrew Pinnock, Winborn came near the Chargers sideline and yelled, “Where's Lo Neal?”

Rivers said he yelled back, “The ball is over there,” and then yelled to Winborn, “You're glad he ain't playing.”

Cutler said yesterday the Broncos had discussed Rivers' antics.

“It's an unfortunate situation,” he said. “They talk a lot of stuff. It got heated between the two teams. Personally, I don't think the teams like each other, which is fine. It's just going to add to it later next year and the year after that. It should be exciting.”

Of all the teams to question what Rivers has done, Denver seems an odd antagonist.

In four career starts against the Broncos, Rivers has a 119.8 passer rating, and the Chargers have won all four by an average of 39-13. In those games, he has completed 69.6 of his passes for 960 yards and seven touchdowns with two interceptions.

“I understand some of the frustration is they've lost four in a row to this team,” Rivers said. “People don't like losing four in a row.”

Family ties make Broncos-Texans compelling

Thursday night's game between the Denver Broncos and Houston Texans is truly a family affair.

Denver's Mike Shanahan developed current Texans head coach Gary Kubiak as he would his own son. Shanahan taught him the tricks of the coaching trade. He taught him his version of the West Coast offense. He taught Kubiak his creative, successful running game schemes. He took him from quarterback to quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator. When Shanahan thought he was ready, he recommended Kubiak for head coaching jobs.

Though both teams stand on the verge of playoff elimination, this game is compelling because of what's happening along the Texans' sidelines. Kyle Shanahan, Mike's son, is Kubiak's quarterbacks coach. Mike Sherman, the Texans' offensive coordinator, is heading to Texas A&M after the season. Kyle, who many believe is a future head coaching candidate, could end up being Kubiak's offensive coordinator.

It's all in the family.

Kubiak, who left the Broncos after the 2005 season, might have trouble recognizing the offense he used to coach. Only tackle Matt Lepsis is left on the offensive line Kubiak knew. Tom Nalen and Ben Hamilton are on injured reserve. Wide receiver Rod Smith is out for the season. The backfield changes week to week. Jay Cutler is at quarterback.

The Broncos may be family to Kubiak, but he needs an introduction to the Broncos' new offensive family. Overall, the Broncos are in transition. After missing the playoffs last season, Mike Shanahan fired his defensive coordinator, shook up the defensive line, cut the middle linebacker and traded for cornerback Dre' Bly.

But things haven't worked out. Though Shanahan's game plans and Cutler's development at quarterback remain intriguing, the Broncos took major steps backward this season. The offense is averaging 21.6 points per game, but the defense is giving up 25.8 points per game. Those aren't playoff or Super Bowl numbers, and Shanahan thinks only in terms of Super Bowls.

What's interesting about this game is whether the Texans are ready to pass the Broncos in the AFC pecking order. Kubiak seems to have found the right quarterback in Matt Schaub, but the poor offensive line play that doomed David Carr has finally caught up to Schaub. He's been hit and beaten down all season. With Schaub out with a dislocated left shoulder, Sage Rosenfels is trying to get the team to .500 Thursday night.

Both teams enter the game with 6-7 records. Shanahan is hoping to keep Denver's fading playoff hopes alive. Getting to .500 doesn't mean a lot to him if a trip to the playoffs isn't attached. For Kubiak, though, getting to .500 means progress for a former expansion team that is moving in the right direction.

Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan has been fined $25,000 by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for making inappropriate comments about the league's substance abuse program.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed the penalty to ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Shanahan's comments regarding Henry, who on Tuesday won his appeal of a one-year drug suspension, were determined to be in violation of league policy. In November, Broncos running back Travis Henry agreed to take a lie detector test administered by the team and give hair samples for testing. Henry passed the lie detector and his hair samples came back negative for marijuana. Had Henry failed the lie detector test, Shanahan said he would have considered releasing him, but Henry passed the test and had the full faith of his coach. Goodell's office said Shanahan's comments were made outside the appeals process and that they supported processes -- hair sample testing and the lie detector -- that are not endorsed by the federally certified lab the NFL uses. Henry will be able to finish out the remainder of the season with Denver. "Travis Henry will remain in the substance abuse program, must continue to adhere to all aspects of it, but will not be suspended following his appeal," the NFL announced in a statement Tuesday.

I mean NFL... NEED Brady to win because their heads are so stuck up his ass! There is holding in every play of every game. Tonight the refferees changed the game. I would send every referee in that Patriots vs Ravens back to umping for Little League for the rest of their lives or to prison.

In August, Pueblo West football coach Monte Pinkerton took 22 of his players on a journey to the top of Pikes Peak, with the message: "Once you get started, you never stop."

On Saturday, Pueblo West went to the top of the mountain again. The Cyclones, on the strength of an impressive, late fourth-quarter drive, beat Monarch 21-14 in the Class 4A championship game at Invesco Field at Mile High and became the first Pueblo-based team to win a football title since Centennial's Class 5A title in 1992, when there were six 11-man classes.

"We knew we were sort of carrying the torch for people down there, and this means a lot," Pinkerton said. "We wanted to show people up here that we do play football down there, and we play pretty good football."

It was smashmouth football at its finest, with both teams moving the football with relative ease (at least 3 yards at a time) and sustaining time-consuming drives.

Monarch (12-2), on the strength of a fumbled punt by West's Victor Chavez that kept a drive alive, tied the game with 5:16 to play. Sean Fox converted from 5 yards out and an atypical (for run-oriented Monarch) pass on a two-point conversion from Derek DiCarlo to Nicolas Rothschild made it 14-14.

That set the stage for the Cyclones (12-2) to make their run to glory. An 11-play, 61-yard drive featured a mix of Joe Torres, Justin Jackson and Tony Chavarria.

But a pass won it. On a newly inserted contribution to the playbook, quarterback Chaz Vaughan ran a bootleg left and found tight end Bo Martinez open in the back of the end zone for the game-winner.

"It was like the movies. It was moving pretty slow," said Martinez, who had his only two catches of the day on the final drive. "We have to have that extra element, just to keep them on their heels."

Said Monarch coach Phil Bravo of the Cyclones' play call: "We knew they had one shot in, and they just caught us sleeping with the play-action. It was a gutsy call, but they have a seasoned quarterback and if nobody was open, I'm sure he was going to throw it out of the stadium."

Monarch, which churned out 236 yards on the ground led by 127 from senior Cale Soole, had 27 seconds left to tie and was forced to throw. Ryan Stepisnik's option pass was intercepted by Zach Fillmore.

Pueblo West's defensive line and linebackers were terrific all day in shutting down Monarch's running lanes, and every now and again defensive back Andrew Williams would knife in for a big play, including his diving stop of Soole on a crucial fourth down in the second quarter.

Williams earned MVP honors from The Post for his six-tackle effort.

Second-half turnovers, early deficit too much to overcome

PUEBLO - A great amount of fight and grit wasn't quite enough to keep state championship hopes alive for the Fossil Ridge High School football team.

The SaberCats battled to the final gun Saturday afternoon before falling to Pueblo County 36-26 in the Class 3A state quarterfinals at Hornets Stadium. Three second-half turnovers and an inability to slow down the Hornets' punishing running game combined to prevent Fossil Ridge from earning a date in the semifinals.

Despite falling in a 24-8 hole early in the second half, Fossil Ridge narrowed the deficit to 10 twice. But both times, Pueblo County answered with touchdowns to keep the SaberCats from gathering game-changing momentum.

"You keep trying, but kind of in the back of your mind, it seems hopeless. It wasn't," Fossil Ridge coach Clint Fick said. "I never felt our kids backed down."

Fossil Ridge, the sixth seed in the 3A field, ended its season at 9-3. No. 3 Pueblo County (11-1) advances to play No. 10 Berthoud (10-2) in the semifinals.

Pueblo County's strong interior defense held Fossil Ridge to 105 yards rushing, which led to quarterback Brian Leistikow going primarily to the air. Leistikow went 12 for 29 for 215 yards passing with two touchdowns to Mike Lamb.

The Hornets ran it a whopping 64 times for 322 yards, and backs Joe Pullara and Gio Rider combined for five touchdowns.

"It was kind of hit-and-miss. We stopped them sometimes, and sometimes they had breaks," Fossil Ridge linebacker Greg Rushing said. "I thought we did a great job at gang-tackling and hitting them low, just not quite good enough."

The 'Cats caught a tough break early after putting the Hornets in field-goal formation on fourth-and-eight. The Fossil Ridge sideline was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct - the fourth dead-ball flag in five plays - which led to Pueblo County getting a new set of downs and scoring the opening touchdown.

"We got called for saying something on the sideline, but it did not happen," Fick said. "Officials make mistakes but that one was unfortunate."

Fossil Ridge answered with a mammoth 17-play drive that covered 93 yards, the last 10 on a strong scoring run by Lamb. But the Hornets then put together a 14-play scoring drive of their own for a 16-8 halftime lead.

The SaberCats made a key mistake to open the second half when Leistikow lost a fumble. It led to another Pueblo County touchdown and a 24-8 lead.

Leistikow ushered quick-strike scores on two of the next three possessions, a 41-yard touchdown run and a 46-yard scoring pass off a nice misdirection-based screen play. The problem was Pueblo County answered each time with short touchdown runs by Pullara.

With 7:10 to play, the turnover bug hit again, giving Pueblo County free possessions to run more time off the clock. Leistikow hung a couple passes and was picked off twice by cornerback Marshall Stout.

"We were down and needed quick scores, and I guess the passing game is where you do it," Leistikow said. "Turnovers killed us.

That's what brought us down and really hurt us."

Leistikow gave it one last run, hitting Lamb with a 58-yard touchdown pass, but the SaberCats failed on all three two-point conversion attempts in the second half and still trailed by two scores. Pueblo County recovered a pair of onside kicks to further stymie Fossil Ridge's comeback bid.

"If we made that two-point conversion, we move within one score with 1½ minutes left and if we could have executed the onside, we still had a chance," Fick said.

"They did a great job. The kids never quit."

West KOs South in battle for the Hill

Broncos, Chiefs look to rebound from disappointing losses

The Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos each had a disappointing first half of the season.

The beginning of the second half doesn't look much more promising for either of the AFC West rivals after both teams lost a key offensive player to an injury last weekend.

Kansas City running back Larry Johnson and Denver quarterback Jay Cutler are both uncertain for Sunday, when the Broncos and Chiefs meet at Arrowhead Stadium.

Johnson, one of the NFL's top three rushers in each of the last two seasons, sprained his right foot against Green Bay last weekend and is highly questionable for this game, Kansas City coach Herm Edwards said Tuesday. Edwards added that he's not sure how much time Johnson might miss.

"He's got a swollen foot right now so that's not good," Edwards said. "The severity of it, I don't know because I'm not the doctor. As far as I know right now, it will be very difficult for him to play this week."

Cutler, meanwhile, was carted off the field after taking a helmet to his lower left leg last Sunday against Detroit. Tests showed that his leg isn't broken, but it is badly bruised and coach Mike Shanahan said he didn't know if Cutler would practice much this week or be under center Sunday.

"There's no stress fracture. There is a bruise. It's badly bruised," Shanahan said. "We'll see what the recovery time is."

The injuries come as major blows to the Chiefs and Broncos, who are hoping to overcome their sluggish starts and take advantage of the weak AFC West.

Despite ranking near the bottom of the league in total offense, the Chiefs (4-4) are tied with San Diego for the division lead. The Broncos (3-5) have lost five of six, but are just one game back.

"I don't think a wild card is coming out of this division this year," said Edwards, whose team is 29th in the league with 15.5 points per game and 30th with 286.3 total yards a contest.

That offense could struggle even more without Johnson, who had topped 100 yards in three of his last four full games before the injury. If he's unable to play, the Chiefs will rely on a platoon of Priest Holmes and rookie Kolby Smith.

The 34-year-old Holmes, Kansas City's leading rusher from 2001-2004, has only seven carries for 17 yards in two games this season -- his first since suffering head and neck injuries in 2005.

"Priest Holmes obviously won't be the featured back. We're going to have to do it by committee," Edwards said. "Kolby Smith is going to be used. I'm not going to sit here and say Priest will carry the ball 30 times. That wouldn't be fair to Priest."

When he threw five shutout innings against them in June, Jeff Francis became only the third lefthander in the past five years to beat the Red Sox in Fenway Park without allowing a run.

Interleague play sapped a little bit of the buzz from this World Series, with the Rockies having played in Fenway Park in June, winning two out of three while handing Josh Beckett his first loss of the season. At their Tuesday workout, the Rockies looked nothing like the Padres at Yankee Stadium on the eve of the 1998 World Series. The Padres snapped pictures, shot videotape and toured Monument Park. By the time they rubbed the stars out of their eyes, they were flying back home down two games to none.

"Obviously, the stakes are a little bigger this time," Colorado GM Dan O'Dowd said, "but it really helps a young team like ours to have been here before: to know the hitting background, how the field plays, the environment. ... This is a confident team."

Jack Elway is 3-3 in his debut season as Cherry Creek's starting QB.

John Albert Elway III has lived his entire 17 years in the gigantic shadow cast by his Hall of Fame father, retired Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway.

But Jack, as he is called, has never been given anything because of his pedigree, which includes a grandfather who was a successful college football coach and a mother, Janet, who was a collegiate swimmer at Stanford. Instead, he has paid his dues at every level of football before advancing to a starting quarterback position this fall as a junior at Cherry Creek (Englewood, Colo.) High.

He was introduced to football at a young age, playing Pop Warner ball as a second grader, but it didn't come easy.

"It was kind of hard at first," Jack said. "I didn't really always understand how the whole offense worked. It [football] really wasn't that big of a deal at that point."

His mother remembers those early years, saying, "He was not that interested in football and, in fact, would become very nervous while I was driving him to games. He would count the stoplights and could hardly wait to get home to his video games. Today he adores the game."

During his freshman season at Cherry Creek, Jack shared quarterback duties and started at linebacker for the freshman team. His sophomore year he moved to the junior varsity, where he continued to learn the system as a starting quarterback.

As this year started, Jack had to battle a transfer for the starting quarterback position on the varsity squad. Coach Greg Critchett said they went down to the final pre-season jamboree before Jack earned the starting nod.

The words pressure and steady improvement help to describe Jack's budding career. First the pressure. What more needs to be said than someone named Elway living in a Denver suburb? As a youngster, Jack always wore his dad's famous No. 7 uniform. However, as he reached varsity status, he hesitated. "It was kind of a big thing for me to be labeled," he said. "I could have been my own person. But I'd been No. 7 my whole life and decided to keep it."

Critchett says his young signal caller has "handled it really well. Things don't quite faze him. I think there is pressure there. We've tried to keep him away from some of that stuff. It's tough, because there was a lot of hype even before he won the starting job."

Judge's ruling gives Broncos' Henry more playing time

A federal judge's ruling in the case involving Travis Henry's attempt to avoid a one-year suspension for a repeat violation of the NFL substance abuse policy has likely provided the Denver Broncos' tailback with another month or so of playing time.

According to court records first cited by The Denver Post and confirmed by a clerk, U.S. District Court Judge Leonard Wexler has ordered lawyers for Henry and the NFL to file motions in the case in two weeks. There is an additional week after that in which the two parties can file responses to the motions.

Henry also has appeal rights in the league which might further delay a suspension and keep him on the field deeper into the season. The issue being challenged by Henry is that the NFL would not allow his expert to observe testing of the so-called the "B-sample" of his specimen. Although the collective bargaining agreement permits a player to have an expert present for the testing, league vice president Greg Aiello said that expert cannot be affiliated with any laboratory. The expert presented by Henry, Dr. William Closson of Long Island, N.Y., did have such an affiliation. The NFL provided Henry with the names of 10 independent experts as reference for his potential use.

That's how long it had been since the Broncos absorbed a home loss of the magnitude they suffered Sunday at INVESCO Field at Mile High.

In the years since, the Broncos have accomplished almost everything a franchise can, winning 81 more games than it has lost, claiming six conference championships, two world titles and 17 playoff appearances.

Cutler's great potential matched by confidence

There are times when Phil Simms watches LaDainian Tomlinson run and it almost takes his breath away. But Tomlinson isn't the only player in tomorrow's Chargers-Broncos game about whom Simms can say that.

“You know when you watch LaDainian run sometimes, you say 'oooooo'? ” Simms asked. “The same can be said about Cutler sometimes when he throws it.”

That would be Jay Cutler, the Denver quarterback who will be making just the 10th start of his career tomorrow. The Broncos traded up in the first round a year ago to make the former Vanderbilt star the 11th overall selection, and he started the final five games of his rookie season.

Simms, who won a Super Bowl as the quarterback of the New York Giants and now works as CBS Sports' No. 1 NFL analyst, said Cutler has “a thunderbolt sometimes in that arm.”

And the fact the Broncos have gone 4-5 in Cutler's previous starts, or that he has thrown almost as many interceptions (10) as touchdown passes (13), doesn't bother Simms at all.

“I don't care what his numbers are,” Simms said. “I think greatness is a possibility. We will see. But does he have a chance? Yes.

“He's a much better athlete than people realize. He's tough, he's strong – he's got a swagger to him. I want to go, 'Jay, you're too cocky for a young guy,' but I like it. It's the right kind of swagger. Guys want to follow him.”

Just as the Chargers have entrusted their future at football's most visible position to a young player, the Broncos have done the same with Cutler, who at 24 is a year younger than Philip Rivers. Like Rivers, Cutler has had his moments both good and bad as a starter, and while the two have fairly similar statistics this season – Rivers has one more TD, one more interception and a slightly lower passer rating (82.8-76.0) – the Broncos starter hasn't taken as much heat from fans. Of course, Denver has lost one fewer game, too.

“Jay's been fairly consistent,” Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said. “All quarterbacks are going to go through some growing pains, but you're hoping (they) don't make the same mistakes twice and he's been pretty good about not repeating mistakes.”

The Chargers will be the first team Cutler has faced twice; in his second start last December, he completed 17-of-30 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns. He rallied the Broncos from a 28-3 deficit to within 28-20 before the Chargers pulled away in the fourth quarter.

“It was a tough go at it, especially in my second start,” Cutler said this week. “I've now got a little more experience – not a lot. I think I'm playing better, making better decisions.”

Cutler said he benefited from having the offseason “to go back and look at everything that I did, good and bad. It's coming along gradually. I'm making steps week by week.”

The pressure is always on a quarterback, but especially in Denver, where everyone is compared with John Elway. Cutler said he knew the situation and he said, “You've either got to take ahold of it and grasp it or it's going to eat you up. It's been fun.”

The same could be said by the last three quarterbacks to face the Chargers. They had fun to the point where they completed 67 percent of their passes for an average of 311 yards with eight touchdowns, three interceptions and a 108.1 rating. But Cutler, being politically correct, denied being overeager for tomorrow's game.

“You can't get too excited,” he said. “People are trying to jump off the bandwagon because they've given up points and (lost) games. Those guys are talented; they can make plays. We've got our hands full.”

He added: “You've got to get rid of the ball. Teams have been dropping back and getting rid of the ball and just making some plays. That's what we're going to have to do.”

San Diego Chargers (1-3) at Denver Broncos (2-2)

San Diego's offense is 26th in the league in total yards. But (stop me if you've heard this before) that will change Sunday. The Broncos are as good as any franchise at taking what they have at the beginning of a season and rearranging the parts to best effect by midseason, but this year, Gen. George Marshall couldn't reapportion this defensive line effectively. Defensive tackles Sam Adams and Amon Gordon were benched for the Indy game, but Marcus Thomas and Antwon Burton weren't any better. They're the second-worst outfit against the rush. Oh, to be a LaDainian Tomlinson owner this week.

Fantasy Up: Third-and-19. That was the down and distance, after a Shawne Merriman sack, when Damon Huard hit Dwayne Bowe on a little slant that Bowe took to the house, and it encapsulated the Chargers' season to date. The secondary has lapses and can't tackle. The linebackers are injured and can't tackle. Can you believe these guys have allowed 99 points in their past three games? All that said, with Denver's injuries, I might consider using the Chargers D on the road. Matt Wilhelm's return at linebacker could really help. … If Travis Henry really might be out, because of his knee, his ankle or his looming drug suspension, the onus will fall on Jay Cutler. This is the first time I've rated him as a fantasy starter all year. If he doesn't have Javon Walker, we might need to rethink this, but the way to move the ball against San Diego is to throw. … Daniel Graham seemed as if he was everywhere against Indy in Week 4. He got four targets, and he has taken the reins from Tony Scheffler. … Antonio Gates had a combined 12 catches for 152 yards against the Broncos last year.

Fantasy Down: Is this the week Norv Turner gives Philip Rivers less to do? Rivers consistently makes two or three killer bad decisions per game; in Week 4, it was a bizarre checkdown in which Rivers suddenly and unexpectedly left Gates and whipped the ball at LDT, who practically ducked and had the ball bounce off him and fall into Derrick Johnson's arms. You can't use Rivers. … If Henry is cleared to play, you'll start him. If not, Selvin Young might make an interesting last-minute substitute, although the Chargers are still very rough against the run. Either way, with the legal problems Henry faces, Young needs to be owned in every league. … Vincent Jackson dives in my rankings this week. He dropped a sure touchdown that would've changed San Diego's game in Week 4 and admitted to being "distracted" afterward. Not good.

Manning takes apart weird scheme

INDIANAPOLIS -- As soon as the eight-man inactive list was distributed Sunday afternoon, the Broncos were in trouble, and it had nothing to do with wide receiver Javon Walker and safety John Lynch being scratched because of injuries.

Mike Shanahan tipped off that it was going to be tough to beat the Colts (4-0) in the RCA Dome. During the offseason, the Denver head coach hired Jim Bates to restructure his defense, trying to get bigger and tougher at defensive tackle. But because the Broncos were playing Peyton Manning's no-huddle offense, Shanahan scratched starting defensive tackles Sam Adams and Amon Gordon. Instead, the Broncos lined up in a weird alignment in which they started four defensive ends, one of whom (rookie Jarvis Moss) played as a stand-up defensive tackle.

The Broncos went vegetarian when they needed some beef and were blown off the line of scrimmage and out of the game 38-20. But that's what happens when coaches face Manning. The Colts' quarterback gets into coaches' heads so much that they become unconventional. Shanahan -- who lost to the Colts by 31 and 25 the past two times they met in the playoffs -- is no different.

"We knew going into the game we had to limit Indy's possessions," Shanahan said. "I think we did limit their possessions, but obviously they did a great job of making some plays, running and throwing the ball.' MORE>>

A short while after shocking Oklahoma, and by extension, the world, Colorado coach Dan Hawkins was squiring recruits across campus on a golf-cart tour.

It turned into a victory tour, as the caravan was mobbed by celebrating students.

"Everyone's fired up," Hawkins said with a chuckle Saturday night.

Underdog campuses were fired up all over America on Insanity Saturday. They were also fired up in Auburn, Ala. And in Manhattan, Kan. And College Park, Md. And Tampa, Fla., too.

The students in those locales had reason to party after their teams upset top-10 teams this weekend. Down went No. 3 Oklahoma to Colorado, No. 4 Florida to Auburn, No. 7 Texas to Kansas State, No. 10 Rutgers to Maryland, and on Friday, No. 5 West Virginia to South Florida.

Throw in upset losses by No. 13 Clemson and No. 21 Penn State and even first-half deficits for big dogs USC and LSU against Washington and Tulane, respectively, and you have Insanity Saturday. Just that fast, the college football landscape shifted seismically beneath our feet.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Javon Walker watched practice from the sideline on Thursday with an ice pack wrapped around his right knee.

However, the Broncos wide receiver said the swelling in his surgically repaired knee is nothing to worry about and that he fully expects to play Sunday at Indianapolis.

Javon Walker is confident that he will play on Sunday, but it will remain a game-time decision.

"This is too big of a game," Walker said. "Everybody wants to play in a game like this."

Broncos coach Mike Shanahan will evaluate both Walker and safety John Lynch (groin) on Friday and make a decision on whether they'll play. Shanahan said both will be game-time decisions.

"We'll see how much they recover over the next couple of days," Shanahan said.

Walker missed almost all of his 2005 season in Green Bay after tearing his right ACL. He joined the Broncos in a draft-day trade last year and caught 69 passes for 1,084 yards and eight touchdowns.

Walker leads the Broncos in receptions this season with 19 for 230 yards. He was held to two catches for 10 yards in a 23-14 loss to Jacksonville on Sunday.

"It felt pretty good today," Walker said of his knee. "I'll probably give it a tryout (Friday) at practice and see how it feels, and get ready for Sunday. It's nothing that got repaired or anything to be concerned about."

It's about time they saw what the other side of the coin looks like, well they should be chewing on their own heartless game against the Jaxwires all week long well digging on their full padded work out. Maybe they will start looking at them selves as mortal instead of patting each other on the back for squeaking out of the past two games against the two sucky teams of the NFL, the Bills and Raiders ,and get some bloody heart. I hope that was a long plane ride back from opppss never mind they played at home.

No worries though, now that they got this lose behind them they will Clam together and beat the living high horse out of the Colts.
Did you see the master mind at work. He wanted to pull out more of his play book but could not, why? because the play book is waiting for the Colts. There are bigger fish to fry but in this case Colts. I say Broncos will beat the Colt because they will have a bloody heart. It is a match made in heaven.

Sorting through the contenders and pretenders

Even though it's still just September, there are 10 undefeated teams. So which teams are contenders and which are pretenders? Let's break it down.

1. New England Patriots

This is the best team in the NFL with no major weaknesses. The Patriots game plan better than anybody, have a roster full of veterans and they make in-game adjustments better than anybody. Defensively, they are getting great play out of their LBs and this is a group with amazing versatility. They can play run or pass defense equally well. They can blitz, they matchup well and this is a unit full of interchangeable parts. On offense Tom Brady has his best weapons ever and is starting a magical season. His pass protection is good, he spreads the ball around, and if the Patriots don't pass, they have the talent to run the ball effectively. On top of everything else, they play with a chip on their shoulder. This team is never unprepared nor looking ahead and it's not out of the question New England could go 16-0.
Status: Contender

2. Houston Texans
QB Matt Schaub and a much improved defense are finally giving the Texans a chance to be competitive. The defense, led by a D-line that is starting to dominate, is creating turnovers and is especially stout versus the run. Offensively, the Texans are running the ball effectively, controlling the clock and letting Schaub make key plays when needed. Schaub is not putting up huge numbers, but he doesn't turn the ball over and gives this team a boost of confidence heading into this week's showdown with the Colts, which will show just how far this team has come -- or has to go.

Status: Pretender.

3. Indianapolis Colts

The defending Super Bowl champions look a lot like the team that won it all a year ago. Let's see, great offense, incomparable quarterback, a good running game and a defense that shows excellent team speed? Yep, sounds familiar. But they are somewhat undersized and still susceptible to physical, power run games. The Colts have four new starters on defense but you get the feeling they'll be a top 15 defense in another month because of their athleticism and range. If that happens. Indy will be tough to beat because we know it will put up a lot of points. The Colts don't have to play great defense to get back to the Super Bowl, they just have to be a middle of the pack unit. This will be a tough team to beat.
Status: Contender.

4. Pittsburgh Steelers

These are vintage Steelers. They run the ball with a physical style, play an attacking defense that punishes opponents and ask QB Ben Roethlisberger to manage the game and utilize a very effective play-action package off the run game. They don't give up big plays on defense and may be the best in the league at creating turnovers. As strange as it sounds, this is almost a tougher and more physical team than it ever was under Bill Cowher. If everything else is clicking, the Steelers don't have to be great in the passing game because they will control the clock and tempo. All they need Big Ben to do is manage the game and limit turnovers -- a strong recipe for playoff success.
Status: Contender.

5. Denver Broncos

Some people would call them lucky after two narrow wins over inferior opponents, but good teams find a way to win when they don't play their best game. The Broncos are in that category. Remember, even though the season is only two weeks old, Denver is in the top third in almost all offensive and defensive categories. On defense, the Broncos have the best CB duo in the league (Champ Bailey and Dre Bly). That allows them to blitz and play a lot of exotic schemes behind man-to-man coverage.
